sincere, with a good start and forgettable end
this is a very sweet and sincere album, and some of the songs on it are quite good (namely "Don't Look Back"). but the last four songs are less inspired and generally uncompelling. lyrically this is decent but nothing special—most of the good songs are good for their melody / arrangement. it feels to me like a quaint vacation in the countryside. in a nice little house with knick-knacks and embroidered pillows, but the pillows aren't as comfortable to sleep on as they are nice to look at. but it is worth it for the cozy view from the nook in the attic. does this make sensePublished

The title, Beachwood Canyon, brings to mind sixties folk albums and Jem's third album is very reminiscent of those works released by Carole King and Joni Mitchell. Of course, she isn't exactly as gifted a songwriter or as adroit a guitarist but these songs are inviting, layered with embracing vocals and intriguing reverb. The melodies may not be memorable but the atmosphere is welcoming.
