Joe Meighan, Jr.

Knoxville, TN

Joseph Clinton Meighan, Jr., age 80, of Knoxville, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2016. He was known to all as a kind man and wonderful father who had a great love for his family and the peace of the outdoors. He was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church and of the Knights of Columbus. He was a business owner, private pilot and community volunteer. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy's Mobile Construction Battalion; was a long term member of the Civil Air Patrol where he served as Wing Commander, Southeast Region Commander, served on its National Executive Committee and received numerous awards of distinction. He was also a member of the Knoxville Volunteer Rescue Squad where he served as a member of its Board of Directors.

He was preceded in death by parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Clinton Meighan, Sr.; and his sister, Joan Meighan Reed. He is survived by best friend and mother of his six children, Molly Shults Meighan; children, Terry Sharp (Rusty), Colleen Bartlett (Mike), Joe Meighan, III (Lori), Julie Meighan, Patrick Meighan, and Dan Meighan; grandchildren, Christi Thompson, Geoffrey Thompson, Michael Bartlett, Morgan Bartlett (Heather), Joey Meighan, Jacob Meighan, Bailie Meighan, and Parker Meighan; great-grandchildren, Kirsten and Carrie Streetman.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday April 19, 2016 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church (1041 N. Central Knoxville, TN. 37917) with Father John Dowling officiating. Interment will follow in the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery (John Sevier Hwy.) with full military honors conducted by the East Tennessee State Veterans Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Geoffrey Thompson, Jacob Meighan, Joey Meighan, Michael Bartlett, Brian Thomas, and Mike Bartlett. Honorary pallbearers will be Rusty Sharp and Mike Parrish. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Joe's name be made to Knoxville Volunteer Rescue Squad, 512 N. Chilhowee Dr., Knoxville, TN 37924 or Tennessee Wing Civil Air Patrol, Cadet Programs, 2441 E. General Aviation Dr., Alcoa, TN 37701. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday April 18, 2016 at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel. Online obituary may be viewed and condolences may be made at www.rosemortuary.com

Dear Mike & Family:

I was so sadden to read of Joe passing in the paper this morning. Joe was such a kind man and I enjoy see him and talking to him when he called on our company. You never did hear the man complain it was a up lift to my life and I will miss him dearly.
