Finally managed to watch one more by Jacques Becker who after only three movies started to look like one of my favorite French directors. Dernier atout is lower in quality, understandably as it is his first, and pretty nonchalant while trying to be sly which puts an annoying gleam on it but also provides a reason to keep watching as the film ramps up in entertainment. We're wrapped in a nice blanket of double crosses, lost briefcases filled with money, beautiful women, car chases, clever partnerships and foolish police captains. In a weird way Becker presents to us a workers revolution type of situation only that the workers are beginner detectives fresh out of school so it kinda cancels out.…
59/100
Jacques Becker's first film. Nothing special but good lighthearted fun with some nice moments.
Playful French crime flick. Not too remarkable, but it keeps the pacing up and does have it's moments. To me it got stronger the longer it went, as the start didn't completely have me. Toward the end I at least started caring a little.
Jacques Becker first film. A solid light hearted thriller that already shows he can come up with a well thought scene even if the film seems to be little more than a means to put his foot inside the industry.
Two rooky cops (Raymond Rouleau and Georges Rollin) are friendly rivals. When they are assigned to a case involving a man (Gaston Modot) murdered in his hotel room, they discover there is more to the case then a fight with his girlfriend (Catherine Cayret). The man who was killed is the current Public Enemy #1 in the US who had absconded with funds. The business partner (Pierre Renoir) and his sister (Mireille Balin) are in town searching for the money. The young cops must deal with gangsters, a little romance, and their own incompetent boss (Noël Roquevert) to solve the case.
First full feature directing credit for Jacques Becker. The next year he co-wrote and directed Goupi Mains Rouges (1943).…
Light-hearted and fast-moving murder mystery that mostly flew by me without much impression. May need to see this under better circumstances (ideally from a print) some day.
Becker's first film, a pastiche of the American gangster film (presumably in the absence of the genuine article in French cinemas in 1942) set in some imaginary South American country. Entertaining enough, although not much sign of the greatness to come.
35mm / Film Forum / Jacques Becker Retrospective
Becker’s first film, a mildly engaging noir, ends up becoming unnecessarily complicated compared to its simplistic ambitions. The film is enhanced by its cast, Rouleau, as the ambitious cadet going undercover to solve a crime and an amusing brusque Pierre Renoir as the animated gang leader.
