ESET is lightweight and has exceptionally high detection ratio and relatively responsive cloud (LiveGrid) to tackle emerging viruses. However, ESET's behavior-based detection is not so solid, compared with Kaspersky's System Watcher, Bitdefender's ATD, even Avast's IDP. So your PC is likely to get infected if ESET fails to detect Trojans using traditional scanner.

Overall, ESET is still a great AV.

It's one of the best according to AV-Comparatives and AV-Test. For example: https://www.av-comparatives.org/tests/summary-report-2020/

"ESET gets an Outstanding Product Award for 2020, as it reached Advanced+ level in all 7 tests this year. It also receives the Gold Award for False Positives, and joint Silver Awards for Malware Protection and Advanced Threat Protection. Reviewers were impressed with the clear and simple layout of the GUI, and ease of use". - AV-Comparatives 2020 Report

Low PC impact, very low false positives and excellent detection rates.

As always, no AV is perfect so try ESET and others before you buy.

"Low PC impact, very low false positives and excellent detection rates."

  • I can easly confirm that. Just to mention.

Pretty decent, has a good reputation and protection

I can't answer the question directly but I can tell my experiences.

The company I am with runs ESET. We have never had a malware attack (as far as we know). We are security conscious so for the organisation to pick it means it is a fairly good antivirus.

On my personal PC, I just happen to be on the market for an AV solution. Becuase my company runs ESET I just went with it. Then I watched this review of the product on PC Security YouTube channel...

https://youtu.be/ps7XNo-DOmI

I immediately asked for a refund.

Since then I have been running Kaspersky. Despite the baseless anti-Russian propaganda which Kaspersky suffers from becuase it's owners are Russian, it is legit the best AV solution you can have. Perhaps only BitDefender is as good.

So in short, watch the live tests done on the PC Security Channel. They are by far the best AV product tests you can trust.

The PC Security Channel is definitely not the best test that you can trust and no one should fully base their AV using decision on his tests alone. You will be surprised to know often how little research he does before testing a product. He has a test called something like Windows Defender Sandbox. That test is a nightmare. He didn't even know what Windows Sandbox is. That video is 100% filled with misinformation. Watch that if you haven't already then search what Windows Dender Sandbox actually is. That was the most stupid thing he did. As I said, he is often very ignorant and doesn't do his research before testing. The ESET test is also a similar one. He doesn't even know how ESET works. He expects every AV to be the same. ESET's HIPS is not a true behavior blocker in the first place and if real-time protection is turned off then the HIPS can't have enough data to do its thing. The real-time protection and HIPS are interconnected. But he didn't even know that. Norton is another product where if you turn off Auto protect then it also turns off their behavior blocker SONAR. Besides, no AV should be tested with any of its modules turned off. AV companies don't create multi-layer solutions for users to turn them off in the real world. So testing with one or more of those off is useless Also, one of the things that no YouTube tester mentions is that the first line of defense is almost always in their malware tests. Malware doesn't magically appear on someone's PC. In most cases, AVs with good web protection like Bitdefender, Kaspersky, ESET, etc would stop the malware from getting into the system in the first place. So don't base your choice solely relying on YouTube tests only. Kaspersky protection wise is better than ESET so, in the end, a very good choice but testers like TPSC should not be a reliable source.

His test is biased.

:-) Ok.

The comments made from 7:45 in this video cover why the ESET test was such a failure, it wasn't the fault of the AV itself but rather the UI not telling the user that if you disable X then Y is also disabled. Basically he crippled the AV far beyond what he intended to.

"As an average user you're probably gonna stick with tested settings" Very contradicting because as an average user you won't click "yes/next" for something so obviously suspicious. Different settings can help. But such a protection is unnessesery. The rest of the work should do the brain.exe process.

and as an averge user you probably won't disable a layer of protection that literally says "real time file protection"

That too. ESET has been the best balance for all my devices, all purposes, for many years. I always had trouble with Windows Defender not picking up certain files which were picked up on more than half of products on VirusTotal, its in build blocking monitor only works in Edge and IE, ransomware protection isn't good either (if I enable more additional settings, it uses a lot of resources), and generally Defender has always been quite heavy on resources on all my devices, especially during in-depth scans. So ESET is by far the best from my experience. Kaspersky is slightly better, probably the best from all, BitDefender is great too, ESET being the most balanced.

I'm using it for like 18 years

since version 3 / 4 on windows xp till now using version 16.x on win 11

I never had problems with detecting intrusions, ransomwares or trojans.
