Came to my attention when I heard his totally over the top and splendid Joe Satrianiesque rendition of that old War classic Low Rider. A very versatile guitarist and one of exceptional ability. This album is completely instrumental but still manages to keep my attention due to Gary Hoey being able to pull off so many styles of playing. By far my favourite style is when he does his "satch" but he is great throughout on this movie soundtrack album. I can't wait to go through his entire catalogue now and soak up some more of his guitar drenched albums!

There's something special about sun soaked summer days. The long, cold winter months bring out an appreciation for June, July and August. There's nothing better than a day at the beach where cool waves and hot women provide the scenery. If I had my spoiled way, every single day would be a warm summer day... an endless summer of eighty degree days and warm evenings.
The 1966 cult surfer film, The Endless Summer, directed by Bruce Brown, was the inspiration for the late sixtie's surfing boom. Twenty-eight years later, Brown directed a modern version of the film. Released in 1994, The Endless Summer II follows longboarder's "Wingnut" Weaver and Pat O'Connell, plus a cast of characters, as they take to the waves around the world.
Despite the simplistic plot, the film is all about fun and adventure, without hitting on ride-the-big-one cliches. In addition, various scenes from the movie show off the incredible beauty of oceans from around the world.
Who would have guessed that a native of Massachusetts would lay down the tunes for The Endless Summer II soundtrack? Well, that's how it went down, as under-rated guitarist Gary Hoey, born and raised just outside of Boston, provides the cool backing music for The Endless Summer II.
With a mix of original compositions, as well as covers, Hoey shifts from his blues-rock and shredding past, as he goes Dick Dale on a number of the instrumentals, including remakes of "The Enless Summer" and "Low Rider". In retro surfdog style, the aforementioned Dale guests on the fourteen song recording, adding his wild tremolo work on "Shake & Stomp (Part II)".

I'm not usually one for instrumental electric guitar albums, but Gary Hoey is pretty enjoyable. His Xmas stuff is always a treat. Thankfully, he usually isn't all about wankery. There's usually some great melody accompanying the soloing. In the case of Endless Summer 2, all the tracks have a surf vibe (of course). Of course the guitars are primarily tuned in traditional hard rock manner, although there are some definite Dick Dale fluorishes. It's a nice listen, but realistically not something one would pull out any old day. Would probably sound great around the pool...
