Born Heinrich Donatus Philipp Umberto; he is the eldest son of German aristocrat Moritz, Landgrave of Hesse.

As the great-grandson of Victor Emmanuel III of Italy, he is named in part after Georg Donatus, Hereditary Grand Duke of Hesse.

Donatus & Prince Philip are distant cousins as the Duke of Edinburgh’s mother Princess Alice was a Hessian princess by birth, Princess Andrew of Greece and Denmark.

Moreover, the Duke’s two younger sisters, Sophie and Cecilie, both married into the Hesse family.

Donatus married Countess Floria Franziska Marie-Luisa Erika von Faber-Castell  in a civil ceremony in Wiesbaden, Germany, on 25 April 2003.

Born on 14 October 1974, Floria is a communications professional and a niece of Count Anton Wolfgang von Faber-Castell, chairman of the board of the famous Faber-Castell pen-and-pencil company.

Prince Donatus and Floria Franziska are 6th cousins.
