  • Gunn's response indicates the success of X-Men '97 won't influence the decision to bring back the beloved TV show.

With X-Men '97 taking off with success at Marvel Studios, James Gunn gets asked if the DC Universe may do a Justice League Unlimited sequel. Following the official conclusion to the DCEU movie timeline with 2023's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Warner Bros. Discovery is starting fresh as DC Studios is set to replace the old franchise with the DC Universe from Gunn and Peter Safran. The new DC Universe will focus even more on the interconnectivity, as DC Studios is developing movies, TV shows, and video games that will all be set in the same world.

Currently, Gunn's Superman movie is still in production, which will be the first DC Universe film for the franchise in 2025. However, that didn't stop the busy DC Studios co-CEO from taking some time over the weekend to respond to an inquiring fan about the possibility of one of DC's most beloved TV shows coming back.

James Gunn Gets Asked About Justice League Unlimited

IamTheLangston asked Gunn on Threads "about giving us Justice League Unlimited '07," citing the success of Marvel Studios' X-Men '97. However, the DC Universe boss responded with, "X-Men ‘97 is fun because it’s unique and not desperately trying to follow the trends of everything around it. So I’d rather just keep doing that," implying strongly that Justice League Unlimited will not be getting a sequel or series revival as part of Chapter 1, "Gods and Monsters."

What James Gunn Has Confirmed About DC Studios' Animated Show Plans So Far

While Gunn's DC Universe mostly consists of live-action movies and TV shows for the time being, there is one confirmed animated project on the slate. As Superman will arrive in theaters next summer, Max will be debuting the Creature Commandos animated series, which will consist of seven episodes, all of which were written by Gunn. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Weasel and G.I. Robot actor Sean Gunn revealed Creature Commandos' release window to be sometime this fall.

Even though more animated projects in the DC Universe have yet to be revealed, Gunn confirmed a key detail for any non-live-action property set in the new continuity, including the Creature Commandos TV show. Any actor who voices their character in animation will also be playing their live-action counterparts, which is a slight difference from how the Marvel Cinematic Universe operates. Despite some MCU stars reprising their roles in animated properties like What If...?, many core characters have ended up being voiced by actors who sound similar to the live-action incarnation, which won't be the case for the DC Universe.

There are likely going to be more animated DC Universe movies and TV shows once the franchise gets up and going. It's also very likely that there may be one or two more that Gunn and Safran have yet to announce as part of Chapter 1, "Gods and Monsters," as they made it clear in 2023 that the initial announcements were not the entire slate for the chapter. But for now, even if Justice League Unlimited won't be coming back any time soon, there will hopefully be tons of exciting animated stories coming out of the DC Universe.
