Shattered [Music from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack]

Alan Silvestri is generally such a tepid, uninspired composer that one feels bad criticizing him for a score as eccentric and ambitious as Shattered...and yet, there's no denying the music in question fails miserably, coming up far short of the suspense and mystery it aims to evoke. Eschewing brass in favor of dark, dissonant strings rich in portent and atmosphere, Shattered borrows much from Bernard Herrmann's landmark Psycho score, but his melodies fail to engage the listener on a meaningful level. Silvestri achieves merely the promise of terror but not terror itself, and as each successive theme fails to build to the blood-curdling climax that would seem the score's raison d'être, the soundtrack collapses under the weight of its own unrealized expectations.
