we went a couple of days before Valentines Day. Restaurant has a great location with a lot of parking which is very unusual for New Brunswick/Somerset area. We were seated right away. Even though the restaurant was full, the service did not suffer. We were...not rushed and really enjoyed authentic French atmosphere. Appetizers were simple and unusual at the same time. Main courses were spaced out enough where you enjoyed the meal and can really taste everything. I have no words to describe deserts, the oozines of melted dark chocolate from a chocolate cake, still makes my mouth water and ice cream proliferoles are still on my mind. If you need to make a special trip to eat at this restaurant, it is definitely worth the time.More

My recent review of another restaurant reminded me of this gem in the middle of "nowhere, NJ". This was, by far, our favorite restaurant in NJ ever since we discovered it 7 years ago. First time we drove there we were very much disappointed by...the location and the way the restaurant looks from the outside. As soon as we stepped in, everything changed. That "don't judge the book by its cover" applies here 100%. The place feels like you've just stepped into a friend's home. The hostesses are superb and, if lucky, the wait is not bad. Even if you have to wait, a nice drink at the bar makes it much more pleasant. The food is superb. We tried dishes from escargot (plenty of garlic and oil) to steaks and fish (both perfectly grilled). The house wine is more than decent. The ambiance is great. Here's a little secret: if Peter (the owner) is around at the end of the evening, he will personally pour his homemade liquor into a shot glass (or two) for you to enjoy. If I could give the place more stars, I would. P.S. Unfortunately, due to COVID, it's currently closed. Hopefully the governor makes the right decision and opens the state soon.More

We dined at Sophie’s Bistro on a recent weekend evening. Simply put, everything about our experience was excellent. The room was perfect, there was ample space between tables, the lighting was elegant, and the noise level permitted conversation without having to raise our voices. We...shared the Salade de Chevre Chaud and it was delicious, especially the goat cheese toast points, with a refined and pleasing dressing. We had the Trout Almandine and the Coquilles Saint-Jacques. Both were superb; the scallop dish was the best ever. For dessert, we shared the Coconut Tart with ice cream. Again, a wonderful way to end a wonderful meal. The wait staff was exceptional, so attentive, courteous, and knowledgeable; we provided more than the customary twenty percent tip. The restaurant had its own parking lot. The bill for our meals was over one hundred dollars plus the gratuity. In sum, just terrific.More

We recently moved to NJ from CA and have been checking looking for restaurants local in Somerset, Middlesex and Mercer Counites. We were surprised to find a french restaurant and had to give it a try. We were pleased at all levels from the variety...and quality of menu items to the knowledge and service of the staff. All in all a good experience and Sophie's added to our list of go-to restaurants as we continue to explore from Philadelphia to New York.More

What a wonderful experience that hit on all cylinders. Cute decor, friendly and prompt service (without being cloying or interrupting), great flavors and reasonable prices. Every course was seasoned properly, had great flavors and served hot. The mussels were simple yet excellent. The frisée with...egg and lardon salad was delicious and not over dressed. The sliced duck prepared expertly as ordered with perfectly cooked haricot vert. For a treat try the cassoulet. Thick and hearty and abounding with great flavor and texture. A small but well thought out wine list, at good prices, completed the night.More

Sophie Bistro is not a french bistro. It just has the name and lives on the reputation and excellence of his original chef. Since then it has been taken over by another team and the current chef worked with the original one. However he forgot...a lot and has americanized the place. We took the escargots. They were good but bathing in oil and big chunks of garlic without herbs. One of us took the Fisherman’s mussels. It had long strings of carrots and leeks were not cooked. Not at all the way a French bistro would cook the mussels. The portion was half of what you would typically get in a French bistro. And details of the details, it was not served in the typical bistro black pan. Dommage! French fries were string ones, not well cooked. Another person took a peppercorn sauce steak (steak au poivre) and clearly the chef hadn’t tasted a real one. The sauce was creamy with three pieces of peppercorn in it and not one was crunched. Crunching the peppercorn gives you the strong « poivre” taste, which is what you need! We also had the pâté. That was probably the best part. For dessert, we took the crêpes with vanilla ice. We got sth from the fridge. A real french chef or a connaisseur one would have known the crêpes are not refrigerated. They are made minute. So the dessert is warm! Not cold. Let’s not talk about coffee. It was a watery bouillon tasting “made in dunking donuts”, not the cafe from a french bistro. Don’t waste your money. It is not french at all.More

Wow, found this place while looking for Thanksgiving dining in 2021. Fortunately I called having gotten nowhere on their website and they told me a special menu was planned. Having little time I asked that the person I was speaking with verbalize the menu and...she was great. I reserved a spot for 6 people right there and then We showed up and the place was visually disappointing. The exterior reminded me of a warehouse, the interior of an empty office space. HOWEVER, this place ROCKS. Look past the lack of attractive decor, the servvice viz-a-viz OCHI was fantastic. As was their menu. Not totally French but very satisfying. We had their Steak au Poivre and their Duck (canard). Both were totally exceptional and their deep fried Brie was decadent. Pete , the owner, was cordial though a bit ornry. The experience was great and we will be back!!More

I was very disappointed in this meal. The service was good and the waitstaff was pleasant and courteous. But the food just wasn't good, from the appetizers to main course to dessert. My partner agreed with this assessment. Going out to dinner is too expensive...to waste on food that was just OK at its best.More

I wanted to try it out since I enjoyed eating at bistros when I lived in France. The food was very good. We had Salade Chèvre Chaud (salad with goat cheese), Croque Monsieur and Steak Frites with Creme Brûle for dessert. I had a glass...of Cote du Rhône. The table outside allowed us to feel safe and hear the hustle and bustle of the town. Our servers Debbie and Brian were warm and friendly. We never felt rushed.More

We had the restaurant to ourselves, as we were there early. They give you some nice warm and crunchy bread with butter. I had the dual filets with cognac peppercorn sauce and scalloped potatoes. Very, very good. Only criticism would be I ordered it medium...and one was slightly over medium and the other was more like medium rare, but still delicious! My mom had some sort of fruit de mare with mussels, scallops and salmon over linguine and she loved it. The restaurant is small so a reservation is a smart way to go. There is a parking lot and they also have a small outdoor area. I will definitely be back to try the French onion soup, the coq au vin and the beef bourginon. A small suggestion would be get better takeout containers.; they don’t stay closed. Overall, great experience.More

Frist time to actually sit in the Sophie's and dine in and it was fabulous from start to finish. From the Mussels to the Main Courses of Scallops for my husband the the Trout for me it was delicious. Excellent bartender who makes a yummy...Cosmo. The Service is outstanding and you never feel overlooked or neglected, they are great. Always a smile on their faces, (under the masks) and they are well versed in the menu itself. The restaurant underwent some changes to make it bigger and it is just beautiful. We cannot wait to go back again.More

We did take out from them again once they reopened and the food was phenomenal. Their take out is better then most restaurants eat in. We had escargot and eggplant appetizers and the shrimp main course. I can’t say enough about how much we enjoyed...it. Looking forward to eating outside once that is reopened next week.More

We had 19 for dinner and got the private room. I worked with Deb the manager who was excellent and professional. We chose the top pre fix menu and was not disappointed. I had the lamb shank and it was very tasty. No complaints from...anybody, and we all liked the house wine, both red and white. I recommend Sophie's highly!More
