      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Field of Dreams is sentimental, but in the best way; it's a mix of fairy tale, baseball, and family togetherness.

Duane Byrge Hollywood Reporter In Costner, writer-director Robinson has found the perfect player for a personal-stakes game, a guy with a leg-it-out intensity and kidlike enthusiasm. It's Costner's eye-on-the-ball exuberance that carries Dreams past its often mechanical aesthetic. Apr 21, 2017 Full Review Michael Wilmington Los Angeles Times All of this would work better if Robinson built up the reality of the town more, made the citizens a more palpable presence, as Frank Capra did in Hollywood's greatest fable-fantasy, It's a Wonderful Life. Mar 20, 2013 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Tribune The sentimentality, of which there is plenty, is nicely balanced by a humor of ironic pragmatism, as when Ray, having built his baseball field as a monument to human dreams, decides to charge tourists $20 a head to visit it. Rated: 3/4 Mar 20, 2013 Full Review Fico Cangiano CineXpress Podcast A wonderful, sentimental tribute to father-son relationships everywhere and the lovely game of baseball. A sports classic. [Full review in Spanish] Jun 21, 2022 Full Review Joe Leydon The Moving Picture Show Situated somewhere between third base and The Twilight Zone, "Field of Dreams" is a modern-day fairy tale about a noble quest for a grand design. BK Never disappointed re-watching this one. An avid baseball fan, I'd read the book some time before the '89 release and it's been a favorite since. If you're the kind of movie fan I am, you want to be wide-eyed with a smile on your face and immersed in the story. Kinsella has a great story here, translated with a deft touch and delivering a few powerful emotional truths by the ending. These days we crave all of this sort of sustenance we can find. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/14/24 Full Review Andrew I LOVE this movie. It means everything to me. My family went to the actual movie site in Dyersville and it was unforgettable Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/14/24 Full Review Jay One of my favorite movies ever Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review vincent I was a very good movie Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/21/21 Full Review Manuel G Just a great film that ages like fine wine. Perfect casting. Perfect writing, and a mystical story that fills the heart with hope and love. Everything is just right and I enjoyed watching every minute just like the day I saw it in the theater 35 years ago. I truly hope there is A Heaven like the one shown here as it brings tears to my eyes see this father son relationship that mirrored me and my father. I never did get to play ball with my Dad he died in Vietnam but I hope...I truly hope I get to see him and play catch one day just like in the movie 🍿 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/27/24 Full Review Michael The best movie ever made!
