Pretty different from the original in terms of feel.
Overall: 52 - 53.25 3.51/5 69 - 71%: Good; detracting problems; TRY IT
Against da Grain shows a lot more of their OutKast influence, although it's still pretty obvious YoungBloodZ are a little more concerned with getting tipsy than changing the world. "Shakem' Off" sounds like a prototype for "Cadillac Pimpin'" on their next album, "85" is a song that never got its due as a single and "U-Way" is a song that did. The rest of the album is mostly your typical dirty south/proto-crunk mix of drinking, southern UGK-styled beats and general southernplayaisms. Against da Grain is a little more enjoyable than the follow-up LP but not by a long amount, and as time goes by this album fades further back into the overall tapestry of hip-hop releases. Sean Paul is the more distinctive MC of the two but neither of them are especially unique in either subject matter or verse construction. Ultimately, the draw here is the 3rd generation Dungeon Family connection and a well-produced collection of feel good raps. YoungBloodZ have a little more topical variety here as well since their focus isn't exclusively on getting crunk. "6 to 14 in 12" for example is about doing time, "85" is about cruising down the interstate to get some good pussy. These guys definitely weren't the dopest hip-hop group, but Against da Grain was a solid release.
