Fool's Gold is the sixth track from One Direction's fourth studio album, Four.
Lyrically, the song describes being aware of a romantic partner's empty love but wanting to continue the relationship anyway, despite feeling used.
The definition of the phrase "fool's gold" is "something you think will be very pleasant and successful but is not".

On September 8, 2014, the band announced the release of their fourth album, Four, on the Today Show. On November 17, 2014 the boys announced the new song Fool's Gold.
Jamie Scott, a longtime songwriting collaborator for the group, spoke to MTV about writing Fool's Gold with Harry Styles.
“I was in the studio with Harry, kind of just recording vocals, and it happened so quick. It took on this amazing sound and meaning for me as a writer on this album.”
Niall Horan covered the song as a solo artist and performed the track throughout his 2017 world tour.
