This is not and easy bike ride but worth the effort. On a clear day the views are amazing. Bring lots of water.

Fantastic hike - heck of a workout for sure! Sadly we didn't make it all the way up to Inspiration Point bc we got confused and didn't realize how much further up it is from this particular trail...and it's not mentioned in AllTrails info - it's listed as a separate hike!

All told - from our car and back and bc we explored extra bc we got a little lost - we hiked just over 6.5 miles, 1700+ elevation gain and did just over 22,400 steps - took us about 4 hours.

This particular trail is about 2 3/4 miles up one way (so 5.4 miles out and back) - you start at the trailhead at the old Cobb Estates area at the top of Lake Ave. It's a steady incline all the way up with lots of switchbacks and was manageable- I'd call this hike moderate to lower level advanced - definitely not a beginners hike. We gained 1700+ feet in elevation and the trail is very very narrow and can be very rocky in places with tall steps. We got there right around 8-810am on a weekday and it was pretty crowded - and also had some mountain bikers which makes for a very interesting situation passing each other on the narrow trails lol! But it makes for a fantastically exhilarating adventure!

You're treated with absolutely gorgeous views of the LA Basin and downtown and we were even able to see all the way out to Catalina island! There were a couple of small benches and one large one on the way. And at the top there are fascinating ruins of the Echo Mountain House (an old Victorian lodge) and the Mt Lowe Railway - there are hug cogs and wheels left and some tracks that go right off the mountain! There are also lots of information plaques telling of the interesting history. I loved it! I realized too late that we totally missed the echo phone in the upper part where some picnic tables are - but I'll be going back once I work up to being able to get to Inspiration Point.

Turns out, Inspiration Point is up another trail once you get to the ruins - and it's about another 2 miles up (4 miles total loop) - so if you do the whole hike, you're looking at just over 10 miles. We got just a tad lost trying to find it bc the signs aren't obvious- but if we had planned better it wouldn't have been an issue. Lesson learned - part of exploration and adventuring!!

Parking is all street parking at the end of Lake Ave and is a residential area. We didn't have any issues finding a spot. But be sure to read the parking signs for any restrictions since this is LA. There are no bathrooms or facilities so be prepared. Bring plenty of water! We needed our packs, snacks, water, hiking shoes and poles for this one!

Within these grounds lie the remains of the history of Altadena, a site of multiple filimings of movies and TV as it and its mausoleum can pass for many places. I contains above ground monuments, large trees and Mt. Wilson as a backdrop.
    Ghost tours every year.
Headstones tell the history of Altadena.

We loved our day-trip to the Millard canyon Falls. There is a beautiful river with clear water leading to a refreshing waterfall, a serene forest with the smell of fresh leaves, some fall colors even so late in December, and nature in all its glory. Definitely worth more than a visit.

    Parking:
On our way to the Millard falls trail head, we saw two parking places. The first one is street parking half a mile away from the main parking lot. Space is limited here, about 9-10 cars can fit. There is a trail here as well. The trail is at the top of the hill and as a biker said, it is a 7-mile hike to the falls. People who are more interested in climbing/ biking take this trail. There is a sign here showing you the direction towards the main parking lot. Follow the sign downhill.

The main parking lot is down the hill next to the campground. They require an adventure pass, but on a weekday, several cars were parked without one. There are plenty of parking spots.

    The Trail
The trail head to the falls is a couple of minutes away from the parking lot. The trail is pretty easy to find. As long as you keep walking alongside the river, you will be fine. At times, you have to cross the river to go to the other side.

It is easy if you are young and/or fit. For seniors and/or people with health issues, the trail is moderate. There are at least 2 challenging spots. One is at the beginning where you have to climb a short wall and the other one involves walking on steep rocks. People are nice and helpful though. So as long as someone helps with challenging spots, seniors can also enjoy this trail. The whole trail was almost two miles to and back.

There are a lot of families with small children. You can bring something to eat and use the benches in the campground. We also saw some people camping. There is a bathroom in the campground, not very clean. Other than that, the trail and the campground are clean and pleasant.

I came with a group of people and the trail was mostly flat so fairly easy. We also took some off-trail routes and got to see the stream in LA. It felt like we weren't in the city and it reminded me of hikes in Portland.
