The Expanse is set to end with its sixth season, which began airing on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, December 3.

The final outing for the Rocinante crew will no doubt be emotional for fans, but for actors Steven Strait and Dominique Tipper, it gave them the chance to see the romance between James Holden (Strait) and Naomi Nagata (Tipper) evolve.

Strait and Tipper spoke with Newsweek about their characters' relationship, saying Season 6 was their "favorite version" of the pair because of the mutual love and respect they've come to have with one another.

On Holden and Naomi's "beautiful" romance in Season 6

Reflecting on what's in store for the crewmates-turned-lovers in the final season, Tipper began: "It's my favorite version of them, like the arc that they go through in this season. I just think they're at a very mature point in their relationship where, for once, the thing that's not tearing them apart is them, it's kind of almost outside of them.

"And I just think they have a really good way of dealing with each other at this point as a couple. But, also, they face these kinds of philosophical challenges that are new to them."

She added: "But, again, I just think they deal with them so well over the arc of the season, and it culminates in this really beautiful ending for them, which I think they deserve, and I think it was earned.

"It was quite a joy carving that out of this season, actually. I think it's an important through line of the whole thing, and we had a great time mining it and crafting it."

Season 6 sees Naomi and Holden go through many trials and tribulations, particularly in their fight against the XO's former lover Marco Inaros (Keon Alexander), and how she deals with her frayed relationship with son Filip (Jasai Chase Owens).

Strait added to Tipper's sentiment, claiming the final six episodes will provide "a really satisfying conclusion to this amazing journey that these two characters have been on over all these years."

He explained: "To [add to] what Dom was saying, my favorite scenes that I got to work on this year were with Dom and to explore the maturity and depths of the relationship that has really grown over the years in such intimate ways.

"These two people, I remember we were talking about them getting together so many years ago and it's like two people clinging to each other in a storm, while all this stuff is just going on around them.

"And, you know, they've managed to traverse all these things, despite these harrowing moments and decisions that are made, with love and respect."

Teasing a happy ending for Holden and Naomi, he went on: "It's a wonderful thing to be able to show a relationship that's truly genuine and respectful and loving amidst the chaos of what's going on [to] humanity in the show.

"It does kind of come to this very elegant end towards the end, so it's really satisfying, it's satisfying to play and I think it's satisfying to watch."

The Expanse Season 6 airs weekly on Fridays on Amazon Prime Video.
