After having a fight with his girl friend, Marc follows her to Rome to try and win her back. On the train he meets a girl who is on her way to stay with her uncle. He gives her a lift to her uncle's, but they discover he has gone to South America. So as she has nowhere else to go, she stays with Marc and his cousin, which inevitably leads to romance.

Die Szene in der Mario Lanza als amerikanischer Sänger auf der Suche nach musikalischen Engagements durch die Straßen Roms tingelt, und er realisieren muss, dass in Italien selbst die Zeitungsjungen und Hausfrauen auf den Balkons mindestens so gut singen und musizieren wie er, ist pures Cine-Gold. Tutto è musica in Italia!
"Arrivederci Roma" ist ein Musicarello mit dem Fünfzigerjahre-Tenor Mario Lanza in der Hauptrolle. Dem Film gelingen einige großartige Bilder des damaligen Rom, das via Hubschrauber überflogen wird, und sich locker aus der Situation ergebenden Gesangsnummern, die nie aufgesetzt wirken. Die Handlung, die neben einer Liebesgeschichte davon erzählt, dass Lanza als Tenor in den USA ein Star, in Italien aber nur einer unter vielen ist, spielt bei soviel Schönheit der Bilder und Musik bald keine große Rolle. Und das braucht sie auch nicht.
Der ganze zwischenmenschliche Kram langweilt. Aber das ist auch den Machern klar. Und so darf man alle paar Minuten eine neue atemberaubende Einstellung von Rom oder orgiastische Musikeinlage in Technicolor freudig erwarten und genüsslich aufsaugen!
First film of the festival and already an ending to die for: Poor Beppo finding out that being a "true musician" and an "artist", the very thing he longed for all his life, for him first and foremost means not being a tenor - and therefore losing the girl. He has to stay behind, in art, in music, while Mario Lanza and Marisa Allasio walk off, into romance, into the spectacular.

That wonderful scene with Lanza and the street girl, her pressed, squeaky voice, and especially her awkward, lanky posture. The sudden, unexpected emergence of a body still resilient to cinema.
Ein bisschen viel Oper und ein bisschen wenig Schlager... Dafür entschädigen die hochwertige Optik, die gediegen spießige Inszenierung, typisch für die späten 1950er Jahre und die grandiosen Stadtansichten von Rom (teils sogar von oben).

After a great night out I felt like watching an easy-going flick. Buying the Warner Archive DVD a few weeks ago,I decided it was time to climb the hills.

Whilst Mario Lanza's voice booms,Warner Archives delivery a poor transfer,with the top of the frame appearing to have a broken bit of nail,large specs of dirt dimming the Musical sparkle and the Italian songs having no English subtitles. Filmed in the glorious outdoors of Rome, director Roy Rowland & cinematographer Tonino Delli Colli turn the city into a Broadway landscape,with elegant crane shots sweeping along the brightly lit hills of Rome.
