Anyone used their HSBC debit card at ATM's in Thailand??

We travel to Thailand next Friday and I was planning on taking sterling travellers cheques for my curreny, however as most money exchanges in the UK charge a commission on sterling TC's we have decided to take our HSBC debit cards to use at ATM's instead.

I have already contacted HSBC and notified them of my dates of travel, they have also confirmed the only charge I will incur is a 1% fee (max £5) for each transaction (excluding the 150 baht ATM charge in Thailand).

Has anyone used their HSBC card in Thailand before, if so did you have any problems?? Would you recommend this method for accessing our currency?

5 nights and counting!!!

If HSBC charges 1 pct plus 150 baht ATM fee - probably no different than purchasing T/C's - lot suppliers only charge 1 pct.Should be no problem using HSBC card but I would have back up of some cash. Also try to use ATM outside bank during opening hours in case of problem.

I had no problems with my HSBC card anywhere in Thailand, and even most places in Cambodia too.

Good you told them your dates, otherwise they will block your card. If you have the Plus Account, then it is free foreign withdrawls, really good if you travel alot. If I remember right, my limit on cash was 20,000 baht a day, if i needed more then drew cash on credit card (for a charge).

Enjoy :)

yes it should work fine but i wouldnt like to rely on just 1 card [just in case ] so i would have £100 or £200 in cash as back up .plenty of places to change .
