Compiled from Woody Allen's legendary standup routines of the mid 1960s, Standup Comic is an absolute necessity for any acolyte of the man's solid work from his Casino Royale and New Yorker phase.
"Here's a good example of oral contraception. I asked a girl to go to bed with me, and she said 'No.'"
Between a youthful stint as a TV gag man and his groundbreaking films of the 1970s, Allen tried his hand at standup. He was, predictably, a success. Taken from nightclub dates in 1964, 65 and 68, Standup Comic shows how stylistically similar he was to contemporaries like Bill Cosby but also how his absurd flights of imagination made him utterly unique.
"I took a puff of the wrong cigarette at a fraternity dance once. The cops had to come and get me. I broke two teeth trying to give a hickey to the Statue of Liberty."
Now that he's a junior-varsity Ingmar Bergman, it's easy to forget that Allen's first public face was that of a world-class shlub--a rumpled redhead who shared stories of analysis, sexual frustration and failure. The long-form tales featured on Standup Comic (including Allen's famous bit featuring a moose and a cocktail party) provide plenty of laughs as well as an early glimpse at this protean comic genius. --Mike Gerber

Since I have no knowledge of the original albums, it's hard for me to miss the deleted material. All I can say is I hope that Rhino will release the original records (now long out of print) in their entirety (I'd happily pay the double CD price).
Rykodisc has done an impressive job of remastering these previously bootlegged albums into one disc. If you listen closely, you can hear "record static" on portions of the album, but for the most part this is a remarkable re-mastering. My only disappointment are the liner notes by Jim Hughes, who speaks only of his love of this album rather than sharing with us information on Woody's tenure as a standup comic. However, he does properly credit Woody with inaugurating the "little life" ancedotes that the writers of "Seinfeld" spent years trying to emulate.
If you are a hard-core Woodman fanatic, you will hear a few jokes that later crept into his movies ("I was rejected for service by the Army. Interestingly enough, I was classified 4-P. In the event of war - I'm a hostage.") It's also easy to imagine how some of this material would have ended up in his movies. Some people may say that the material sounds dated at times. Actually, there are very few references to current events - what dates the record is the total lack of profanity (a staple in Woody's films as well, for the most part). I love the dirty words of Richard Pryor, Denis Leary and George Carlin as much as any other comedy fan, but I find the lack of hard language as a refreshing alternative to today's toliet-joke comedy culture. If you're a Woody fan and have been procrastinating this purchase out of fear that you'll be disappointed, don't worry. Woody's stories will have you dusting off this CD for an occasional spin for years to come. See for yourself.
As his base was in comedy writing his stand up act is very literate and has all the flow of an engaging novel. His delivery is perfect. He's comfortable and confident on stage with perfect pacing. He comes across as having a conversation with his audience that he enjoys as much as they do, often laughing along with them as the jokes come so fast and furious that he doesn't bother with laugh breaks for many of them as he moves foward to bigger pay offs. You'll laugh in different spots each time you play this CD.
Woody is groundbreaking and innovative, even amongst his peers like Lenny Bruce, Nichols and May or Mort Sahl but he also is so steeped in comedic history benefitting from the rythm and stylings of his childhood heroes Bob Hope and Groucho Marx. You'll also detect a bit of Catskills shmaltz in the mix.
You cannot really understand where stand up comedy has been or where it's going without getting to know Woody's heavily influenced and heavy influential performances.

I was just beginning my stand-up comedy career when I purchased this CD. Truth be told, it almost discouraged me from continuing. Why? Because Woody Allen uses words to such perfection and because he has more "laugh lines" on the first track than I ever got in an entire set.
For me, the first three tracks of the 1968 performance are the hook. As a joke writer myself, I have no idea how he could have come up with the premises. It’s the most brilliant stand-up I have ever heard.
The 1965 show was only moderately funny. It was a bad recording and contained too many over-the-top scenarios like the moose at the costume party. But "Unhappy Childhood" and "European Trip" are standout tracks.
I thought that the 1964 performance was the freshest sounding of the three. The audience seemed very close to the mic and they loved him. The first track "Private Life" was brilliant. Most of the other tracks are excellent, too--especially “Brooklyn”, “My Grandfather" and "N.Y.U."
As you listen, take note of how many brilliant SENTENCES there are--never mind jokes. The punchline of the joke about the dog from the damaged pet shop is so damn brilliant-- yet no one had ever said it before Woody.
I don't let Woody's controversial private life cloud my judgment of his comedy. Woody Allen was a brilliant stand-up. He could have become a very wealthy man if he remained a stand-up. Instead, he let us into his clever mind through film instead.
There are some great comedians today. In my opinion, Louis CK is the best. But no modern comedian could pull off what Woody Allen does on this CD. The sheer volume of jokes coupled with his delivery nuances are impossible to duplicate.
This CD is very hard to find now. Rhino Entertainment took ownership of the recording in 1999. Try buying it used on Amazon.com.
At times somewhat dated with references from 1960's politics and society, there are still enough routines which will be very funny by listeners of all generations ("Mechanical Objects"; "The Moose", to name a few). This comedy CD will be enjoyed by all, and is even funner the second time around.
