A surprisingly good adaptation of the book, emphasizing some of Homer’s more interesting ideas while not exactly neglecting the action and the more famous side quests. Kirk Douglas is a perfect Odysseus, all arrogance and mischievous intelligence, and Giada De Laurentiis’s grandmother is incredible as both Penelope and Circe.
Kirk Douglas made two wildly successful historical epics prior to SPARTACUS. THE VIKINGS is the far better of the two, but ULYSSES had more influence. Many films it ushered in eclipse it, making its value more academic than entertaining.
The alumni are impressive. Douglas used it to get very generous profit participation with THE VIKINGS, while it emboldened Dino De Laurentiis to shift from neo-realism producer to the fearless — but often creatively meddling — spectacle mogul of cinema I knew him as growing up. The genesis of the peplum cycle of Italian films, cinematographer Mario Bava was in on the ground-floor. He’s half the reason I checked the film out. Bava’s technical work is merely a dry run here.…
if i ever made a list of the ten most beautiful films i've ever seen, this would be on it. i've never seen this collection of hues & textures hit this richly
Pretty slow in some parts but ends up being fantastically thrilling from Circe’s Island onwards. The final act is utterly delightful. It’s also so so gorgeous, Mario Bava shot most of it and it’s just a visual feast. The lighting, set dec and costuming is so stunning.
I started with the American dub but ended up settling on the Italian version which was a much more fulfilling choice.
The beautiful looking grandpappy to all the Sword-N-Sandal films that would follow. Excellent cinematography by Mario Bava, but not enough creatures or excitement,
This heavily abbreviated adaptation of The Odyssey with a permed and bearded Kirk Douglas as the Homeric hero having a series of adventures on his way home from the Trojan Wars to be reunited with his wife Penelope (Silvana Mangano, who also plays the temptress Circe) has an interesting backstory, not least the fact that the joint Italian/French/American co-production was to have been directed by G.W. Pabst (of Pandora's Box fame).
However, Pabst was replaced at the last minute by veteran Mario Camerini (who two decades earlier had cast future director Vittorio De Sica in the utterly charming 1932 confection Men, What Rascals!) and - intriguingly - Mario Bava, Godfather of the 'giallo' genre, who reportedly helped out with the…
The ancient story of Ulysses and his adventures and travels from Troy back to Ithaca brought to the big screen as a major sandal and sword saga.
Kirk Douglas excels as Ulysses but the real eye-candy is Silvana Mangano in her double role as Penelope and sorceress Circe. She simply looks magnificent.
The colors still look as fresh as the day this movie was shot (1954), and the music score is evocative and impressive.
A very pleasant surprise.
Kirk's Odyssey
"No. There are greater Gifts. To be born and to die and in between to live like a Man."
This movie means so much to me. When I was in high school, I had an awful teacher who taught Ancient Greek. The subject was supposed to be divided equally: 50% civilization (history and myths of Ancient Greece) and 50% grammar. However, our teacher, whose name shall not be mentioned, skewed it to 10% civilization and 90% grammar. It was tiresome, boring, and extremely difficult. This torture lasted for four years.
Then there came a special week when our teacher had a cold, and we got a substitute known for her kindness. We had her for a week, which meant three hours of classes. She knew how our teacher behaved and felt very sorry for us. She said that the…
