Fresh are the horrific memories of the death of his wife, killed at the hands of the Union soldiers, an act that sets Bohannon on a course of revenge. This contemporary Western tells the story of his journey, a story that rides on Union Pacific's construction of the first transcontinental railroad. Bohannon's westward travels take him to a lawless melting pot of a town called "Hell on Wheels," which moves with the construction of the railroad. Kenny Herzog New York Magazine/Vulture Hell on Wheels has made its final stop, but a freeze-frame of where it pulled in would shine bittersweet light on a country moving full-speed ahead like a train in vain. Rated: 4/5 Oct 3, 2018 Full Review Sean McKenna TV Fanatic Hell on Wheels Season 5 was a strong last outing, from its new direction and characters to the conclusion of Cullen and the Swede's battle to making us continue to care about Cullen through all his ups and downs. Rated: 4/5 Oct 3, 2018 Full Review Garret Castleberry PopMatters Durant further embodies a harbinger that darkly foreshadows the shape of the American political landscape and a post-truth Presidency. Rated: 7/10 Oct 3, 2018 Full Review Kendall Williams Den of Geek Five seasons later, the series Hell On Wheels, has come to satisfying and bittersweet end with the completion of The Transcontinental Railroad. Rated: 4/5 Oct 3, 2018 Full Review Rob Lowman Los Angeles Daily News Anson Mount as Cullen Bohannon, the onetime Rebel officer employed by the railroads, is the epitome of a Western star. He supplies his character the expected stoicism but also a range of emotions and conflicts. Oct 3, 2018 Full Review Ryan Sandoval TV.com Luckily, there's a few new faces to help play out the morality saga that is Cullen Bohannon's every waking moment of life. beverly s Best show ever. Watched it as a devoted fan through July 2016. Streamed it recently (2023) and had forgotten just how good it is. You won't be disappointed. Liked it even better the second time around Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/13/23 Full Review Audience Member While it may lack the bravado breaking bass finale had hell on wheels ends with a satisfying story and keeps you interested the whole way Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Hell On Wheels is in general one of the best dramas describing how the Euro Americans laid the foundation to the destruction of a continent, and the building of the transcontinental railroad was an absolute peak in this development. Even though the characters are either invented or a more or less heavily romanticizing of historical persons, all to fit a brilliant plot, the depiction of the invironment following the railroad track is basically genuin. The melodrama is based on real human relations within a frame of true historical events, and despite a free creative dramaturgy, the plot never loses proximity to the authentic events. On top of this the creators manage to make a highly engaging story, and the cast, acting, direction, costumes, set designing and cinematography is all sublime. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Seasons 1-4 were great; Season 5 is crap. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This was a perfect last season. It connects the dots in all the right ways and completes the show's arch in a cathartic and satisfying way. This season makes the whole show feel surreal and mythical as if, instead of a TV show, you are watching an Old West legend playing out right before your eyes. Absolutely fantastic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Hell on Wheels really brought it for its final season. While I particularly enjoyed the final "battle" between Cullen and the Swede, the final few episodes also established a satisfying closure for Bohannon as well as Durant and the railroad itself.
