The Exorcist is an American horror television series based on the novel The Exorcist, written by William Peter Blatty. It was created by Jeremy Slater and premiered September 23, 2016 on FOX. It was nominated for a People's Choice Award for "Favorite New TV Drama", but lost to NBC's This is Us. The series was renewed for a second season on May 12, 2017, set to premiere on September 29, 2017. On May 11, 2018, Fox canceled the series after 2 seasons.

Synopsis

Season One

The Exorcist is a propulsive psychological thriller following two very different priests tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession. Father Tomas Ortega is the new face of the Catholic Church: progressive, ambitious and compassionate. He runs a small, but loyal, parish in the suburbs of Chicago. He has no idea that his quiet life is about to change forever. Deep in the slums of Mexico City, another priest has found himself locked in a life-and-death struggle with evil. Father Marcus Keane is a modern-day Templar Knight, an orphan raised since childhood by the Vatican to wage war against its enemies. Father Marcus is everything Father Tomas is not: relentless, abrasive and utterly consumed by his mission – and he constantly butts heads with his adversary within the church, Father Bennett.

Caught in the middle of the two priests is the Rance family, who are members of Tomas’ parish. On the surface, they’re a normal, American family, but all is not as it seems in this household. The patriarch, Henry Rance, is recovering from a traumatic injury. Eldest daughter Katherine has become a recluse who refuses to leave her room. Her younger sister, Casey, thinks she’s hearing strange noises coming from inside the walls. And mother Angela believes there is something in the house, a demonic presence, growing stronger by the day. Desperate, she begs Father Tomas for help, unwittingly setting the naïve young priest on a collision course with Father Marcus. Separately, each faces an insurmountable task, but together they become the Rances’ only hope against an evil force that has been mobilizing for centuries.

Season Two

Season Two of The Exorcist, opens an entirely new chapter in the iconic franchise, where Father Tomas Ortega and a newly collarless Marcus Keane out of Chicago and on the road, searching out evil. Across the Atlantic, Father Bennett attempts to weed out those within the Vatican who have turned against God. Ultimately, Tomas and Marcus are led to Andrew Kim, a former child psychologist who runs a group home for five at-risk foster children on a secluded private island off the coast of Seattle. When one of the children under Andrew’s care is targeted by a powerful force, the two priests head west, setting themselves on a collision course with Hell.

Production

Development

Jeremy Slater wrote the pilot. On January 22, 2016, Fox ordered the pilot to be shot. The series was described as "a propulsive, serialized psychological thriller following two very different men tackling one family's case of horrifying demonic possession, and confronting the face of true evil."

Casting

On February 24, 2016, Brianne Howey was cast as Katherine Rance. On February 29, 2016, Hannah Kasulka was cast as Casey Rance. On March 2, 2016, Alfonso Herrera and Ben Daniels were cast as Father Tomas and Father Marcus respectively. On March 3, 2016, Kurt Egyiawan was cast as Father Bennett. On March 7, 2016, Geena Davis was cast as Angela Rance. On June 7, 2017, it was announced that Davis, Ruck, Kasulka and Howey would not return as regular cast members in the second season. Herrera, Egyiawan and Daniels returned, as their characters would preside over a new possession case. In July 2017, John Cho, Brianna Hildebrand, Zuleikha Robinson and Li Jun Li were cast in series regular roles for season two, while in August 2017, Christopher Cousins and Cyrus Arnold were cast in recurring roles.

Filming

Fox announced that the first season of the show would be shot in Chicago. Season two filming began July 28, 2017, in Vancouver.
