Extraction franchise star Chris Hemsworth offers a positive progress update on the planned threequel in the hit Netflix action franchise. According to the acclaimed actor, Extraction 3's development is moving in the right direction.

Speaking with Collider, Hemsworth addressed the status of Extraction 3 after Netflix confirmed the threequel last June. According to the Australian actor, the next Extraction title is "in the works" as development continues making strides. “We’re in the middle of sort of writing, prepping, getting it ready. I don’t know when we’re gonna start, but it’s in the works,” he said.

Hemsworth's Extraction 3 comments come after similarly encouraging updates from Netflix and producers, the Russo brothers (Joe and Anthony Russo). Before exiting Netflix in January, then-head of film Scott Stuber assured fans the threequel was on its way despite initial development delays due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. In April, the Russos confirmed development of the film was going well, with Joe working on the screenplay, as he did for Extraction 2, while the creative team figured out Hemsworth's schedule. Sam Hargrave will also return to direct the next Extraction follow-up.

Chris Hemsworth Will Return as Tyler Rake in Extraction 3

Starring Hemsworth as former Australian SASR operator-turned-black ops mercenary, Tyler Rake, Extraction is Netflix's most successful film franchise. The first two editions charted simultaneously last summer with impressive viewership numbers, making Extraction the first Netflix movie series to achieve such a fear. An adaptation of Ande Parks' graphic novel, Ciudad, Extraction 2 received positive critical reviews (79% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the sequel's action sequences, performances and technical aspects widely praised. Hemsworth was also hailed for putting himself through the wringer with his death-defying stuntwork.

Extraction 2 also introduced Idris Elba, who starred as the mysterious Alcott in the sequel. Elba recently teased "unfinished business" with Hemsworth's central character in Extraction 3 and hopes the film comes to fruition. Stuber and the Russos also mentioned how crucial Alcott is to the story and is one of the driving forces of the potential threequel being made.

Hemsworth is promoting Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which will be released on May 24. He is also expected to make a cameo as Thor in Deadpool & Wolverine and is the voice of Optimus Prime in the upcoming sci-fi animated film, Transformers One.
