Constituency overview
Madhya Saurashtra came to be known as Rajkot Lok Sabha constituency in 1962. U N Dhebar, the first chief minister of Saurashtra (which later became a part of Gujarat when it was formed by merging parts of Bombay, Saurashtra and Kutch in 1960), won from Rajkot – the capital – in the 1962 Lok Sabha polls. He had served as Congress national president from 1956 to 1959. Before him, Manubhai Shah, who had served as a minister in Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi governments had won from Madhya Saurashtra in 1957.
Having won elections from Zalavad (1957) and Surendranagar (1962), Ghanshyam Oza of Congress won from Rajkot in 1971. Within months, he was elected the Gujarat chief minister. Keshubhai Patel, who also went on to become the Gujarat CM, won this seat in 1977 as a Bharatiya Lok Dal candidate. However, Ramji Mavani won it back for Congress in 1980 by beating Chiman Shukla of Janta Party. Mavani’s wife Rama retained the seat for Congress in 1984 by defeating Shukla, who was then a BJP candidate. However, BJP’s Shivlal Vekaria defeated Rama in the 1989 election. BJP then won the seat in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004, 2014 and 2019. Since 1989, Kunvarji Bavaliya’s victory in 2009 is the only Congress victory from this seat in the last 35 years.
