Alonzo Thompson Lonnie Lincoln, also known by his alias Tombstone, is a recurring character in Marvel's Spider-Man series. He appears as a side antagonist in Marvel's Spider-Man series with a series of side missions, and a side supporting character in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

A former drug trafficker and biker gang leader, Tombstone was notable for using a substance that made him extremely tough and impervious to pain. His defeats at the hands of Spider-Man led him to life as a reformed carnival worker at Coney Island.

History[]

Early history[]

Lonnie was born in 1979, in Harlem, New York. He fought Spider-Man numerous times over the years, but was notable for his resilience, smiling after each defeat.[1]

Marvel's Spider-Man[]

Tombstone at some point became involved with Martin Li. Described in "Dinner Date", Mary Jane Watson sneaked into a building owned by Li, where Tombstone appeared to be hired to construct an armored vehicle for the Inner Demons. During her infiltration, Tombstone killed a mechanic named Rick, his welder, for refusing to fix an imperfection that he thought Li would not notice and then aiming a gun to plead for Tombstone to leave him alone. Mary Jane Waton took a tracking device transmitter and used it to track Tombstone's shipments.[2]

In "Tombstone: On the Move", Spider-Man then investigated the tracking device and tracked Tombstone down to Harlem. In "Tombstone: What's He Building in There...", Spider-Man followed up and tracked it to an Alchemax plant, but was able to piece together a counter-drug that could combat Tombstone's invulnerability, realizing that Tombstone was trying to manufacture it for others.[3] In "Tombstone: Let's Get Ready to...", Spider-Man used the counter-drug to confront Tombstone and defeat him. Though Tombstone was unfamiliar with the feeling of pain, when Spider-Man asked if he would now stop his crminial activities, Tombstone responded the threat of death merely "ups the thrill" and awaited the rematch with anticipation.[4]

Miles Morales[]

Simon Krieger mentioned Tombstone as a potential partner to take down Spider-Man, but stated he was off the grid.[5]

Marvel's Spider-Man 2[]

Tombstone was later released from prison and began reforming, working for community service at a carnival in Coney Island. Peter Parker, Harry Osborn, and Mary Jane Watson encountered him there during "A Second Chance", but he became a target of Sergei Kravinoff's Hunters and was captured.[6]

After Felicia Hardy revealed his location at an abandoned factory to the second Spider-Man, Miles Morales, in "Hunt to Live, Live to Hunt", the original Spider-Man/Peter and Harry Osborn (with Venom) rescued him there before he was to be killed. They were able to rescue him before the factory was destroyed, and he thanked them for their help.[7]

Characteristics[]

Appearance[]

Tombstone is a tall, heavy man. While his pale skin tone suggests albinism, it is actually the result of exposure to chemicals in his youth, which bleached his skin and granted him his powers.

Personality[]

Tombstone is ruthless, brutish, cold, and resilient. His brutal murder of a mechanic who failed him by stomping on their face shows his cruelty and his unforgiving nature.[2] Tombstone holds a deal of respect for Spider-Man's skills and always awaits his next battle eagerly, never stopping despite his defeats,[1][4] showing his persistence. This ended with his decision to eventually reform, in which he maintained his respect for the Spider-Men and worked with them willingly despite doubting their ability to save him at first.[7]

Abilities[]

Tombstone possesses superhuman strength and is able to lift heavy objects with ease.[1] His main strength is his invulnerability, extending to the point of being able to take a gunshot to the head without any noticeable harm,[2] and feeling no pain prior to Spider-Man's counter-drug.[4] Aside from these skills, he is proficient in hand-to-hand combat and firearms.[1]

Original appearance[]

Tombstone first appeared in Web of Spider-Man #36 (March 1988).
