      Requiem: Season 1 Reviews

Watch with the volume high, don't watch marathon-style... has a lot more to offer than what meets the eye. [Full review in Spanish]

Mystery/psychological horror series about a young woman who is concerned her mother may have had something to do with the disappearance of a four-year-old chid over twenty years earlier.

I find the fringe utterly mesmeric.

For all its good performances and scary happenings, the fault lies perhaps in the writing, which couldn't bring the plot elements together within the time it had left.

Requiem is a tense, psychological horror series that is sure to satisfy any fan of the genre. If you're looking for the next Jason Voorhees or Freddy Krueger, you'll have to look elsewhere, as this series focuses on a terror that's much more cerebral.

We're stuck with a show that holds promise but gets bogged down in the subplot of Matilda's true identity, while the supernatural and more interesting elements get sidelined.

With a raft of well-judged performances, not least that of Sian Reese-Williams as the girl who grew up blaming herself for Carys' disappearance, Requiem returns the viewer's investment in spades.

Requiem is an intoxicating thriller that's perfectly suited for fans of the genre.

If you've seen The Wicker Man and/or Hot Fuzz, you may recognize and appreciate the tone of [its] folk horror underpinnings.

It's not breezy, but good escapism if overripe thrills is your thing.

Sometimes violent British mystery has supernatural elements.

As for another Netflix original, the six-episode Requiem, it may be better not to approach at all.

With the surrealism of Twin Peaks, the torment of mother!, and the intense theology of The Sinner, Requiem will feel like a heavenly binge, with a welcome dark twist.

      Full Review | Apr 3, 2018

Requiem offers a few sure answers, but it leaves enough to the imagination to make it both an insightful look at human nature and a compelling piece of TV.

Because of strong performances like Wilson's, as well as the series' lush use of sound, Requiem has enough compelling elements to make it a worthwhile weekend binge for die-hard horror fans.

      Full Review | Mar 23, 2018

It's a series that's more spooky than scary, more intriguing than compelling. Requiem is excellently put together, but perhaps too caught up in its dreamy horror for something that's supposed to carry us through six hour-long episodes.

      Full Review | Original Score: 7.7/10 | Mar 22, 2018

The mystery gets in the way of the horror, and this creates a lot of padding so you do get the sense that it's all incredibly drawn out to a point.

      Full Review | Original Score: 6/10 | Mar 1, 2018

Tales of the supernatural are only creepy if we understand what's going on. Surreal collages are not scary. But Requiem got a grip on itself just in time.

      Full Review | Feb 6, 2018

It's a thriller-cum-horror, although the thriller bits feel a bit well-trodden and the horror bits, so far, are mainly confined to persons unseen making "oo-wah-oo-wah" noises while various characters freak out at mirrors.

      Full Review | Feb 5, 2018

It is scary. It might have been scarier still if there were a little more sotto voce between the full-on fortissimo Hammer horror, for the imagination to get to work.
