      Critics Consensus

Dark Matter's intriguing ideas are spread a tad thin over its season-long runtime, but fans of foreboding sci-fi will find its residue addictively sticky.

James Dyer Empire Magazine Not as ambitious as Foundation, nor as brain-taxing as Constellation, this 'what if?' series hits the spot nonetheless, maintaining Apple's status as the default home of thoughtful, adult-orientated sci-fi. Rated: 3/5 May 23, 2024 Full Review Gregory Wakeman Chicago Reader This sci-fi thriller has its missteps, but powerful leading actors give it depth and resonance. May 16, 2024 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News “Dark Matter” asks us to consider our own dual natures and how they would be altered if our worlds were different. Rated: 3/4 May 15, 2024 Full Review Neely Swanson Beverly Hills Courier Although it’s a bloated nine episodes, there are an infinity of directions for it to go. Not a fan of the genre myself, Dark Matter successfully kept my interest. May 24, 2024 Full Review Jenny Nixon Common Sense Media The writing is a bit dry, but Dark Matter's cast is top-notch -- and the fairly brisk pace means viewers and characters are caught up on what's happening without too much meandering. May 22, 2024 Full Review Ruben Peralta Rigaud Cocalecas Joel Edgerton consistently grounds this high-concept plot, which jumps back and forth with increasing wildness. Phoenix L Great premise. Wonderful sci-fi concepts, that are ultimately overshadowed by character drama. Perfect for anyone who doesn’t read. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/05/24 Full Review Gideon S Finally a smart and interesting SCI-FI show that isn't just relying on CGI. Its a dark show, you have to pay attention and the actors are at the top of their game. Plus, I will watch Jennifer Connelly read the phone book, any phone book. (which of course there no phone books) still... She needs to be in more shows. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/04/24 Full Review Andrea P Boring and slow narration Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/03/24 Full Review Dan R Apple TV's 'Dark Matter' is one very much for the science nerd. Prepare to be blown away and baffled in good measure. SYNOPSIS: 'A man is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could've lived, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from a most terrifying foe: himself.' There's a lot of science in this show but, fortunately, 'Dark Matter' doesn't linger too much on trying to explain exactly how everything works. And that's a good thing because I'm really not sure I'd understand it. The show puts a lot of focus on the family element of the characters within the show. The emotional and psychological ramifications of the movement between universes is quite profound and life changing for the cast. We've seen a lot of multiverse stories in recent years, maybe too many, but this series managed to hold my attention over it's 9 episodes. I wanted more, it had me hooked. The series is far from perfect but Apple has created a show which looks fantastic and is driven by a first class cast. The cerebral and emotional texture of the show, where it asks so many 'what if' questions makes the events on screen so very memorable. The characters suffer regret about their life choices whilst also considering how they could've been better people. It's really powerful. 'Dark Matter' is well worth the mind-altering trip. 8/10 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/02/24 Full Review Darius B This show feels like one of Apple‘s product releases: unoriginal and no sharp edges. Comparing it to Netflix‘s new series „3 Body Problem“, Dark Matter just cannot keep up. There‘s no original dialogue (think of the introduction to Schrödinger’s Cat, which has been done too many times in my opinion, and the superficial conversation about art) and when a conversation is on the brink of becoming interesting, there‘s a cut to the next scene or an anticlimactic turn making it unbearable to continue watching. There definitely are amazing shows on Apple TV, but this isn’t one of them. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/02/24 Full Review Michael G While the acting is competent, the pacing is frustratingly slow and the premise and dialogue are unremarkable, considering half the movies and TV shows being produced these days use the multiverse and alternate realities as plot devices. And then there's the laughable fact that a supposedly brilliant physics professor can't figure out what happened to him within the first episode.
