      Critics Consensus

Mr. Holmes focuses on the man behind the mysteries, and while it may lack Baker Street thrills, it more than compensates with tenderly wrought, well-acted drama.

Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint Suspense and sleuthing are a backstory to this elegant tale of regret, rectification and humility. Aug 15, 2019 Full Review Leonard Maltin leonardmaltin.com What a pleasure it is to be in the presence of Ian McKellen, who dominates the screen in Mr. Holmes. Jul 24, 2015 Full Review Wesley Morris Grantland As someone who neither hungers for yet another incarnation of this character nor understands why anyone would, I watched in subdued bafflement. Jul 22, 2015 Full Review Nick Levine NME (New Musical Express) An unlikely friendship Holmes forms with his housekeeper's young son (child actor Milo Parker) proves especially affecting. Dominique R Perfect movie. I cried in the last 20min. If this is hated by someone then that person does not enjoy classy classical storytelling. Ian is so amazing as Sherlock, he portrays a lonely man that struggles with relationships while being the best at his career. As Sherlock begins to form a grandfather bond child his regrets and few mistakes in life seem to become more redeemable as he comes into his last stages of life. If you are okay with waiting 10mins before the story becomes really interesting you’ll find it was worth the wait. I can’t rave enough about this movie. Clean enough to watch with children is always a plus. I Loved it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/21/24 Full Review Andrea K A sweet story concerning regret and the attempt to make something right before it is too late in life. It's never too late to learn and apply the lessons life has handed us over the years. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/11/24 Full Review Audience Member Best story I’ve seen in a very long time. Ian McKellen & Laura Linney were so beautiful in it. Great acting all around. Thank you- Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/23/24 Full Review Bruno V O background ficou raso, merecia mais um orçamento e uma investida na história. Estamos falando de "holmes" o impecável "holmes", não um personagem qualquer. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Ralph R Loved it! Touching story. Well acted in a simple classic British style, where less is more. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/17/24 Full Review Alec C Watch how this legendary detective graces our screens again, so long into his retirement! Mr. Holmes spends his days caring for bees and hanging out with his housekeeper's son as he tries to remember his final case as his memory slowly begins to give out. An introspective journey into the mind of one of media's greatest crime-solver, this film is both a satisfying conclusion and an emotional journey!
