I just saw the northern lights

Well, sorta. I read online that tonight, there are a bunch of solar flares doing whatever the heck solar flares do in the northern parts of the world. I, unfortunately, live right off the coast of a major city, meaning that there’s an abundance of light pollution to go around. So much so that the aurora borealis isn’t really visible to the naked eye.

However, through my phone camera, I was able to capture the breathtaking rays of greens and purples through picture. It’s supposed to go on and off for about another 3 or so hours, but seeing as it just hit midnight, I should probably to go bed. Although, I don’t know how I’ll be able to sleep knowing what’s happening in the night sky directly above me.

I saw them in the UK, in an area that has probably never seen them. It was the most amazing thing ever, it's actually a bucket list item for me. I cried a little bit

I'm so jealous! I've never managed to see them despite being in an area that's visited from time to time, but it's been amazing seeing everyone's photos and hearing the stories.

I may or may not have woken up my sister and dragged her outside to see it.

I'd have been grateful if it was me! I hope she had a good time, too.

I'm approximately 100km outside of Melbourne, AU. A few of us were already together celebrating a birthday. With a bit of liquid excitement, we decided to make a mad dash up the mountain behind our town on the fire tracks. I'm so fucking glad we did.

Initially a cyan-blue haze lit up in columns, slowly turning to a green to grey gradient. We thought that was it, so came back down, and as we got to the top of my driveway, the entirety of the otherwise pitch black night sky lit up bright red, much like during bushfire. Over the following 5 minutes, that turned orange, then faded into maroon, then back to black.

I'm so excited that I feel like a kid.

So jealous!

I’m in Northern California and just got back from seeing them too! Haha 🥲 I never thought I’d see it so when I heard about it I jumped in my car and drove 60 miles to my favorite stargazing spot! I’ve been awake for 20 hours and driven 120 miles since dinner but it was so worth it!

Same here. How far north?

I’m from the north and used to see them often on my drive to work in the mornings, but last night was the best I’ve ever seen

My husband and I went to an astronomy park to see it and got a bunch of really good pictures, and had a lot of fun and learned some interesting things about astronomy.
