My roommate introduced me to this album in 1978, I was just 18 and Rock'n Roll & Motown was all I knew, boy was I introduced!
It took me years to find the album and only when the internet was born could I search and order the last one.
Sure there are themes here, back when a big band and orchestra still did themes, but wait, you would have to be
deaf or soul-less to not be moved by Times or Too Hip for the Room. It is right up there with Freddie Hubbard's version of Fragile by Sting.
Kenny Smith wherever you are, your musical tastes did not fall on deaf ears, thank you for introducing me to Patrick Williams.

While going through my collection I rediscovered "Dreams and Themes" as I haven't listened to it in a good 15 or 20 years.

Other reviewers have said it well. The arrangements are dynamite, and even 33 years later, they're fun, lively, engaging, and so remarkably unique that I've remembered every one.

And while I've jettisoned loads of CD's from the 80's on which the over-synethsized sound makes me sick, the synthesizer is used beautifully and is an essential part of tunes on this CD.

And then there's Bill Watrous on "Times." DREAMY.

Mystery Clue

Whenever I see a cd, lp, et al selling for like $30-hundreds of dollars, I assume there is one mystery involved. Why so much? There generally, for us audiophiles two possibilities; 1: It stinks, but is the only copy on this planet, or the likely 2: It is awesome, and there are like a half dozen on this planet!

On "Dreams and Themes" let me answer the dicotomy for you...It is the latter! #2 and the fact that it so powerful, one asks why has no one re-issued it to make a sure income, easily putting them into the 1% bracket? Take one selection, the "Theme from M-A-S-H" and you'd know why this is a gem. I have the original soundtrack, I have probably a dozen discs listing that as being included, but no where, repeat NO WHERE, can you find a version to match this one. "Agave" is somewhere between Esquivel and Cal Tjader and will leave you wanting to play it again and again. I tear my heart out I loaned the cd copy I had to some friend because like a thought, it was gone. I have hired detectives to hunt whoever it was down. sadly,no source on the internet offers the whole D&T playlist.

Patrick Williams is had disappeared from the recording scene, but with his recent release, his music, surely, will be sought out. Get your copy of "Dreams and Themes" while they are out there...then ask for, like, a gazillion dollars when they disappear again. Truely one of Patrick Williams' best, ever! Mystery solv ed!
