Who was at the Yalta conference and why was this significant?
All the Allied leaders.
First time the Big Three had met.
What was the aim of the Yalta Conference?
To plan what would happen to Europe after Germany was defeated.
Germany was defeated in May 1945, why was this significant?
The big three could only PLAN what they would do as the conference was in February and the war was still ongoing, nothing was agreed.
Name 4 things that they agreed at Yalta
1) Germany (would be) temporarily divided into 4 zones, each controlled by either UK, France, US or USSR
2) The Declaration of Liberated Europe
3) Establishment of the UN
4) Temporary recognition of communist provisional govt. in Poland.
What did the Declaration of Liberated Europe involve?
To create peace, free elections and democracies in Eastern Europe

What could the Allied leaders NOT agree on at Yalta?
1) Stalin wanted Germany to pay the USSR reparations in coal.
2) USSR gained Polish land and compensated Poland with land from Germany.
3) USSR forced Germans to sell raw food and materials them.
Why did the US not want Stalin to take coal from Germany as reparation?
Roosevelt believed the coal should be used to rebuild Europe.
Why was the West against the USSR gaining Polish land and Poland being compensated with land in Germany?
Would result in an advance of around 150 miles, spreading communism further West
How and why is the Yalta conference so significant?
Very. Highlights the tensions between the Allied leaders, due to their differing ideologies before the war had even ended.
Who's most guilty?
West unwilling to compromise on ANY of Stalin's proposals and it was being made clear that the US and UK were building an alliance against communism.
Therefore.... US (and UK, but probably mainly US)
But.... Some of Stalin's proposals, like the one with Poland's borders were suspicious.
Who replaced Roosevelt as president in 1945?
President Truman
Truman had the same ideologies as Roosevelt, so how was he different in his approach?
Truman was more aggressive towards communism.
Who replaced Churchill as Prime Minister and why was this significant?
Atlee = labour, unlike Churchill who was conservative. As a result, we start to side more with the US.
