Chaps Split Home Double Header Against St. Edward's Saturday Afternoon

LUBBOCK, Texas - The 10th ranked Lubbock Christian University baseball team split a home double-header against St. Edward's at home Saturday afternoon, falling in game one 13-9 and picking up a 8-6 victory in game two.

LCU took an 8-4 lead into the sixth inning, but could not hang on and fell 13-9 to the Hilltoppers in the first game of the double-header. 

Junior Alec Stanfield (0-1) came out of the bullpen for LCU (28-12) and took the loss, giving up three runs in one inning of work, walking three, and striking out one. 

Offensively, the Chaps were led by senior Jaxson Edwards, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Senior Hayden Blair compiled a standout effort as well, going 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Junior Shea Bowen also chipped in for LCU, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a walk and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Chaps got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning. LCU got an RBI single from senior Jarred Gibson, scoring Bowen from second base.

The Hilltoppers failed to push any runs across before the Chaparrals built on their lead in the fourth inning. The LCU offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Edwards, which brought the Chap lead to 6-0.

St. Edward's narrowed LCU's lead to 6-4 before the Chaps stretched the advantage to 8-4 in the fifth inning. Bowen's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run output in the frame for the Chaps.

LCU lost the lead they built in the fifth, but got back on the scoreboard in the seventh trailing 13-8. Senior Carson Ogilvie crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Chaps, tightening the St. Edward's lead to 13-9. The Chaps were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

GAME NOTES

  • Six LCU hitters had multiple base knocks in the ballgame, as Ogilvie, Bowen, Gibson, Ryan Ball, Blair, and Edwards all recorded two hits each.
  • The Chaparrals out-hit the Hilltoppers at a 13-9 clip.
  • Bowen stole two bases in Saturday's game.
  • LCU went 6-for-14 (.429) with runners in scoring position.
  • LCU pitchers faced 40 St. Edward's hitters in the game, allowing 10 ground balls and five fly balls while striking out five.
  • The Chaps drew six walks from St. Edward's pitching, Nate Van Maanen picked up three free passes in the loss.
  • Edward's homer was his first of the season.
  • St. Edward's was led offensively by senior Ryan Feddersen, who went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBI.
  • Senior Austin Essex led the Hilltoppers pitching staff, throwing 2.2 innings of one-run ball.
  • Six of the Hilltopper's 13 runs were unearned.


GAME 2 | No. 10 Lubbock Christian 8, Saint Edward's 6
LCU broke through after a 6-6 tie in the fifth inning to secure a 8-6 victory in the second game of the double-header.

Senior Chris Shull (3-1) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for LCU (29-12). The right-hander went 2.2 innings, giving up one run on one hit, allowing no walks and striking out five.

Junior Brevin McCool led the Chaps at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Chaps were trailing 1-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board.  McCool drove in two runs for Lubbock Christian with a single, that scored Bowen and Gibson.

The Hilltoppers then rallied to score five runs and take a 6-2 lead before the Chaps got back on the board in the fifth. The LCU offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of McCool, which brought the score level at 6-6.

That 6-6 tie turned into an 8-6 LCU lead in the sixth. The Chaps scored twice, with one run coming across on Gibson's single. The score remained 8-6 for the rest of the game, as Shull recorded the Hilltoppers in order in the top of the seventh. 

GAME NOTES

  • The Chaps out-hit the Hilltoppers at a 9-6 clip.
  • LCU went 3-for-7 (.429) with runners in scoring position.
  • LCU pitchers limited Saint Edward's to just 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
  • Chris Rhoades started on the mound for the Chaps, allowing five earned runs in 4.1 innings of work, walking four, and striking out four. 
  • Chap pitchers faced 32 Saint Edward's hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out nine.
  • St. Edward's was led offensively by senior Ryan Feddersen, who went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBI.
  • Junior Jakub Rayfield led the Hilltoppers pitching staff, throwing six innings of eight-run ball.

UP NEXT
The series victory is on the line tomorrow afternoon as the Chaps and Hilltoppers square off in the final game of the four-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Hays Field.
