While there are some good tracks here, this album doesn't really have any definitive Bo Diddley tracks on it, like his first release (which is classified here as a compilation) did. Because of this, the duds stand out a bit more on this album. And while I do appreciate some of the unconventional choices that are made on the likes of "The Clock Strikes Twelve" or "Bo's Guitar," not all of them really work for me.

Favorite tracks: Bo's Guitar, Willie and Lillie

Second release but first actual studio album on Chess Records from BO DIDDLEY sports a similar cover as the compilation that preceded it and simply added the word GO to BO DIDDLEY for the title! While the debut comp was a collection of tracks that displayed DIDDLEY’s alchemic effects of transmogrifying the blues into the new fledgling rock and roll from 1955 to 1958, GO BO DIDDLEY showed an updated sound and displayed how far the rock and roll sound was evolving by the end of the decade with a heavier emphasis on rhythm and blues and more prominent guitar solos including the all instrumental “Bo’s Guitar.” There is more variety on GO BO DIDDLEY than the previous and even though the previous album was a compilation with differing musicians, it had more of a uniformity to it than this one that has all the same musicians performing. There are also many tracks that are simply blues tracks as well.

The many musicians included Peggy Jones on second guitar and some outstanding backing vocals, the prolific songwriting phenomenon and Grammy Award winner Willie Dixon on bass and the leading postwar Chicago blue pianist Otis Spann. Most tracks are rooted in the John Lee Hooker inspired blues and many tracks like “Oh Yea” seem to have forgotten that this was rock and roll now! One of the most unique tracks is the wacky “Say Man” which musically is an upbeat boogie-woogie type of sound with a conversation between DIDDLEY with his long time friend Jerome Green with whom he spent many years playing music on the streets of Chicago. The track is somewhat of a tradeoff of light-hearted insults!

By 1959 rock and roll and blown up in popularity and had become the world’s dominate music for the youth after Elvis Presley introduced it to the white audiences but unfortunately despite having been the primary influence on Presley and many others such as Buddy Holly, DIDDLEY didn’t quite attain the popularity on the charts as did those he influenced but that has since been rectified to a certain degree and GO BO DIDDLEY has been recognized as the treasure trove of classic rock and roll that it is. For example Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it #214 on The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time and it’s not hard to hear why when you throw this on for the first time and just let the grooves and rhythms take you back to a simpler time when the music was pure and unadulterated in its primeval forms. Personally i slightly prefer the catchier tunes on the BO DIDLEY compilation but this followup is chock full of outstandingly catchy tracks as well and not to be missed.

Go Bo Diddley is the second LP issued by Bo Diddley. The tracks were culled material that originally appeared on earlier singles and an assortment of outtakes.

If I were stranded on a island with only this album I'd make myself comfortable.
