Drugs Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You know that nothin' good will come from overthinking all your problems
When the mirror is the one that never lies
It all gets so dramatic, symphonies all turn to static
Honestly, who really has the time?

[Chorus]
Is it me? Just me?
Or is everybody on drugs?
Everybody's on drugs
'Cause the world behind our eyes is better in disguise
So we try to keep the feelings numb
Everybody's on drugs
Everybody's on drugs

[Verse 2]
Now the higher ground is calling
No one's listening, just talking
Treading water when this could be paradise
Burning both ends of the candle
Only so much one can handle
Any friend of yours, they're a friend of mine

[Chorus]
Everybody's on drugs
Everybody's on drugs
'Cause the world behind our eyes is better in disguise
So we try to keep the feelings numb
Everybody's on drugs
Everybody's on drugs
[Bridge]
Is anyone here seeing anything clear?
Or is everyone just one of everyone? Just one of us?

[Chorus]
Everybody's on drugs
Everybody's on drugs
Everybody's on drugs
Everybody's on drugs
'Cause the world behind our eyes is better in disguise
So we try to keep the feelings numb
Everybody's on drugs
Everybody's on drugs

Genius Answer

That one was very literal at first and it felt just too on the nose. So then I worked on rewriting it just to make it feel a little more conversational. It’s really hard when you have a chorus that says, ‘Everybody’s on drugs.’ It seems like this celebratory thing, and even feels like it with this kind of party mentality of the track, but in the verses and the bridge we tried to be adult about it and be really conscientious not to be this glorification of substances. Instead, it’s this sober-eyed view of things going on around us and what it takes people to get through their day.
