All over the place, but so nicely
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Barry Adamson before. I’m not entirely sure what to expect of this album. The name Oedipus Schmoedipus makes me a little wary. Oedipus was a bit of an odd fellow, wasn’t he.
Songs I already knew: none
Favourites: Something Wicked This Way Comes, The Sweetest Embrace
This was a really pleasant album. It felt alt-rock at times, and instrumental jazz at others but somehow it works really well. It even has tracks that sound closer to an orchestral soundtrack. The lack of vocals in a lot of the songs really helps the music shine, and the tracks that do include singing can be appreciated all the more for it. This album is so versatile, spanning many genres yet tying together fantastically. This surprised me, and I like it a lot.

I think this is the first album to ever scare me, as the son It's Business As Usual had me looking over my shoulder, and wasn't a pleasant experience, but in a good way, as it was really effective horror if it got me that wrapped up in it. I'd say the album as a whole is cool, it's got this neat spy thing going on that was surely a big inspiration to artists like Portishead and Goldfrapp. I'd say it started to drag a little near the 3/4s mark, but pulled me back in enough with the Nick Cave appearance. Just don't listen to this album at night, is all. Or do, it's a free RYM.

Dark and mysterious, experimental, rhythmic, soulful from an unusual place. Adamson has his own thing – and it is a good one. There is some humor too, on songs like “Vermillion Kisses.”

This isn't bad, but there's a few tracks that really drag everything down with it. The melodramatic "Vermillion Kisses" is probably the greatest offender in that regard, but it's certainly not alone. Nick Cave helps to elevate "The Sweetest Embrace," and "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Pelvis" is a strong piece, but overall I'm not sold on the music here.

Is that chick on the album cover having sex with a fucking child? Well, at least Acid Jazz album covers are as original as the music itself.

MUCH better than expected! The first track didn't really leave a good impression on me, but from the 2nd up to the 2nd last it is just excellent. This is my first time listening to an Acid Jazz album and this is a genre I'll need to dig deeper into, as it incorporates parts of other genres I like such as Hip Hop, Funk & Soul, as well as some certain traditional Jazz elements. This is something I'll be coming back to for sure, very good album.

This is a strange and compelling album. The guest slots from Jarvis Cocker and Nick Cave add weight while the eclectic nature of the rest of the album make it original (albeit with a few sample pinches from the Ninja Tune stable) and vibrant. There are lovely chill out moments and a super dark spoken word bit sandwiched between two of them consisting of a scary scary woman scorned in the "It's Business As Usual". In addition the production on this is impeccable, full and rich. Essential to own, although you might not play it from start to finish too often...unless you're schizophrenic.
