  • M3GAN 2.0 has already been delayed once before.

Universal has once again pushed back the release date for Blumhouse’s forthcoming horror sequel, M3GAN 2.0. Featuring the return of original cast members Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, the sequel M3GAN 2.0 has also added Ahsoka star Ivanna Sakhno in an as-yet undisclosed role. Originally intended to arrive in theaters on January 17, 2025, the follow-up to 2023’s hit sci-fi horror has already been pushed back once to May 16.

Now Universal Pictures has revealed that M3GAN 2.0 will be pushed back again, this time from May 16 to June 27, 2025. This latest move will see M3GAN 2.0 assume the release slot that was originally intended for another Blumhouse sequel, The Black Phone 2, which has now been pushed back to October 17, 2025.

M3GAN 2.0’s Most Recent Delay Should Not Raise Concerns

The Sequel's Summer Release Positions It To Be Bigger Than The Original

While some viewers may be quick to assume that a release date delay could spell possible problems for the highly anticipated Blumhouse sequel, this kind of date shuffle is exceedingly common as studios seek to better position their releases to achieve the highest possible box office returns. Not only is M3GAN 2.0’s most recent delay only a few weeks out from its previous May date, but it also keeps it firmly within the all-important summer release date window typically reserved for the highest profile projects.

With the original M3GAN responsible for accruing an impressive $181 million at the worldwide box office against a modest budget of $12 million, Universal and Blumhouse’s faith in their burgeoning M3GAN franchise seems well-placed. Offering audiences an updated twist on the well-worn killer doll trope, the success of the original movie not only sets the stage for next year’s sequel, but many viewers seem to think that M3GAN’s killer AI could potentially go on to join the likes of Child’s Play’s Chucky as an enduring horror icon.

Whether M3GAN 2.0 will eventually go on to enjoy the same kind of critical and commercial success as the original movie remains to be seen, but a summer 2025 release date gives it the best possible chance of achieving even higher box office returns. Hopefully, audiences will not be too put out by having to wait an extra few weeks for M3GAN’s return to the big screen, and her new movie will continue to deliver the same high-quality scares as her 2023 debut.
