Summary

  • The Idea of You's August Moon is a fictional band but has real songs on streaming platforms.
  • August Moon bears similarities to One Direction, but Robinne Lee claims they aren't based on the real boy band.
  • Nicholas Galitzine actually sang in The Idea of You.

The Idea of You's central love story is somewhat complicated by the fact that one of them is the lead singer of a mega-popular band called August Moon (therefore bringing unwanted attention to Nicholas Galitzine's Hayes and Anne Hathaway's Solène's relationship), and after watching the movie, some wonder whether the music group is real or fictional. The 2024 romantic comedy/drama, directed by Michael Showalter and written by Showalter and Jennifer Westfeldt, is based on Robinne Lee's book of the same name. As mentioned, the film revolves around the romance between Hayes and Solène, who share a 16-year age difference.

Aside from Hayes, the August Moon band members in the cast of The Idea of You are Raymond Cham Jr as Oliver, Jaiden Anthony as Adrian, Viktor White as Simom, and Dakota Adan as Rory. The five of them make up the boy band August Moon, and their performance at Coachella is how Solène meets Hayes. She takes her daughter and her friends to the music festival, accidentally ends up in Hayes' trailer when looking for the bathrooms, and the rest is history.

August Moon Is Not A Real Band... But Exists Like One

Amazon Released August Moon's Songs On Streaming

Even though The Idea of You makes it seem like August Moon is a real band (with numerous performances, recorded songs, and the stereotypical behavior that every boy group seemingly adopts), they are entirely fictional. Nicholas Galitzine actually sings in The Idea of You (along with the rest of the actors who make up the members of the band). But, unfortunately, Galitzine focuses much more on acting than making music in real life.

Nicholas Galitzine also sang in his 2021 Amazon musical Cinderella.

Although August Moon is not a real band, Amazon Prime Video put in the work to make them exist like one. August Moon has its own social media pages, e.g. Instagram, and their music is available to stream on services like Spotify and Apple Music. If those who watched The Idea of You found themselves tapping their foot along to "Closer," "Dance Before We Walk," and "Taste" by August Moon, they are in luck because those songs are readily available to download and stream.

Is August Moon Based On One Direction?

Many Have Compared Nicholas Galitzine's Hayes To Harry Styles

August Moon Performing Onstage in The Idea of You

Rumors state that Robinne Lee was inspired by One Direction and Harry Styles while writing The Idea of You, but the writer has debunked these claims. Nevertheless, August Moon and Hayes undoubtedly bear similarities to the former boy band and Styles. The fictional music group contains elements of One Direction's style, sound, and fiercely dedicated fandom. Plus, the producers of August Moon's songs also previously worked on One Direction's music and both bands feature five members. So, while August Moon wasn't directly based on One Direction in The Idea of You, the fictional band resembles the real one.
