Garry Shandling Obituary

Garry Shandling, the comedian, actor, writer, and producer known for “The Larry Sanders Show,” has died, according to multiple news sources. He was 66.

He died Thursday at Los Angeles, California, hospital, according to TMZ. A cause of death has not been released at this time.

Shandling was a frequent guest host of "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" and was in consideration to become Carson’s replacement. In 1986, he created his own show titled, “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show." The sitcom ran on Showtime until 1990. Shandling often broke the fourth wall during the show, speaking directly to the audience.

His next show was the highly regarded “The Larry Sanders Show” for HBO. The show was a fictional look at a popular late-night talk show host. He wrote 38 episodes of the series. Shandling was nominated for 18 Emmys for his work on the show.

In 1993, NBC offered Shandling $5 million to take over the talk show "Late Night" when host David Letterman announced his highly publicized move to CBS, but he declined. He was also offered "The Late Late Show" but also turned it down in favor of continuing on "The Larry Sanders Show." The show spoofed NBC's efforts to find a Letterman successor.

Shandling was born in Chicago and raised in Tuscon, Arizona. He moved to Los Angeles and got his start as a writer. He wrote for “Sanford and Son” and “Welcome Back Kotter.”

Fellow comedians and others shared their condolences for Shandling on social media:

Actor Rip Torn on Garry Shandling, "Working with him was one of the great privileges of my career"

Comedian Steve Martin wrote, "Garry Shandling was a very special comedian with a beautifully unpredictable mind. He even voluntarily offered jokes and ideas for Oscars."

From comedian and actor Albert Brooks, "R.I.P. Garry Shandling. I am so saddened to hear this. Brilliantly funny and such a great guy. He will be so missed."

Seth McFarlane, the creator of "Family Guy," "Saddened over Garry Shandling. He was a comedy idol of mine. He leaves behind the greatest single-camera comedy of all time."

I love any comedian who always makes me laugh, Garry was one, also George Carlin, Rodney Dangerfield, David Brenner, Groucho Marx and Steve Allen, they are all now together in comedy Heaven.

Garry's comic style was different (dry sense of humor) and we the fans loved it. He could not be copied, because no one else could pull it off but Garry, but watch out for that punch line. A UNIQUE COMEDIAN THAT CANT BE COPIED.....GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN....RIP

Like Garry I grew up in Tucson, and was so pleased to see a Tucson boy do well. I never got the chance to meet him, but I mourn his loss as though he was my best friend. The world is a darker place with out his humor in it.

Love the Garry Shandling Show. i didn't get to watch the Larry Sanders show until it was off the air, but it was fun. By far one of the best "clean" comedians there ever was. He was always just so nice that when i got a cat who had been named Gary already (and this is the nicest cat i have ever had or been around) I had to name him Gary Shandling.

When Garry passed away recently, i just held my cat for a long silence. RIP.

We studied amateur radio together here in Tucson, when we were youngsters. Later, Garry came over to LA and stayed with me, during my radio days at KRLA and KDAY. Then, 0-60 in seconds, as his career took off!
Let's remember what he told Jerry Seinfeld ('cause Garry got into boxing in recent years) "When I die, I want the referee to stand over me and count 'One-two-three---nope, he's not gettin' up'

My mother and I were watching the evening news, a few short days ago, when the newsman said, "Garry Shandling has died". I am not kidding my mouth nearly dropped to the floor, I just couldn't believe it. I just heard about Ken Howard, and now Garry. They really weren't that old! I remember watching Garry on t. v., and he was a great writer, and a superb comedian who had a fun and wistful take on life. Everybody who met or knew him, thought he was the greatest. The cupid bow lips, the reddish complexion, the wide upper nose and cheeks, and the crinkly eyes, always smiling. A shame to lose a talent such as his. Garry's kind of wry look on life, and great comedy writing, does not come along very often, probably he could have brought vaudeville back too, he was just a fun and sweet guy. He will be terribly missed, and I hope, never forgotten. He was an original!

Death is an uncomfortable subject. Many people prefer not to talk about it. But sooner or later, we must confront it. And the sting of death is sharp and painful.

Nothing can fully prepare us for the loss of a parent, a spouse, or a child. A tragedy may strike unexpectedly or unfold relentlessly. Whatever the case, the pain of death cannot be eluded, and its finality can be devastating.
