Walk Ride Paddle: A Life Outside Hardcover – April 9, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
A compelling account of one man’s journey across hundreds of miles of Virginia wilderness and a moving testament to the optimistic spirit of America, Walk Ride Paddle provides an unseen glimpse into a life outside.
In 2019, Tim Kaine—Virginia senator and former Democratic vice presidential candidate—commemorated both his sixtieth birthday and his twenty-fifth year in public office by undertaking a three-part journey across the Virginia landscape as he hiked, cycled, and canoed across the state. His chronicle became an organic reflection of the extraordinary events occurring across America during that time, including two impeachment trials, a global pandemic, growing racial protests, the January 6 attack on the Capitol, and more.
During weekends and in Senate recess weeks, Kaine—over a period of several years—hiked the 559 miles of the Appalachian Trail that cross Virginia from Harpers Ferry to the Tennessee border; biked 321 miles along the crest of the Virginia Blue Ridge on the beautiful parkways built during the Great Depression to create jobs and give everyday people on the East Coast an accessible place to vacation; and canoed the entire James River—348 miles from its headwaters in the Allegheny Mountains to its entrance into the Chesapeake Bay. Along the way, Kaine reflected on the events that have shaped both his life and the world around him, sharing his deep love for the natural world and the importance of preserving it for future generations in a fascinating memoir that blends adventure, reflection, and political insight.
With immediacy and honesty, Kaine pulls back the curtain to reveal his inner thoughts during such monumental times. Kaine’s storytelling gift and wise observations offer a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a seasoned politician and outdoor enthusiast.
Walk Ride Paddle is a captivating memoir of one man’s physical journey through the Virginia wilderness—but it is also a unique and ultimately optimistic perspective on these pivotal moments in history, offering inspiration, wisdom, and hope.

Editorial Reviews
Review
'Move over, Henry Thoreau, and make way for Walk Ride Paddle, Tim Kaine's fascinating account of his yearslong, 1,228-mile journey hiking, cycling, and canoeing across Virginia's natural landscape. It's not only a love letter to the commonwealth he has served for over twenty-five years and to the family and friends who have supported him along the way, but a deeply personal story about taking account of his own life as he turned sixty. Filled with personal reflections on everything from his strong religious faith to his dislike of wolf spiders to COVID's impact on his health to our nation's dysfunctional politics, this book offers readers lessons for our own lives by traveling with Tim as he challenges himself through exploring his outer and inner worlds, offering much-needed hope for our future.' -- HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON
'Quick, name a United States senator who can backpack the Appalachian Trail and sleep on the ground in a downpour, canoe through many miles of wilderness on the James River, and bike his way from one end of Virginia to the other. Tim Kaine has done all three while writing a beautiful and moving reflection on leadership, faith, and aging well.' -- BETH MACY, New York Times bestselling author of Dopesick
'Walk Ride Paddle is a field guide for the soul. Join Tim Kaine as he hikes the Appalachian Trail, cycles through the Blue Ridge Mountains, and canoes Virginia's mighty James River to find purpose, meaning, and clarity. Tim shares the challenges and joy of renewing the spirit as he moves through the natural world, and you will too. Thoughtful, winning, and wise, this book is a celebration of all it means to be human, where movement, heart, and thought itself combine to make us God's work of art. I will return to this glorious book in the years to come to shore up my soul.' -- ADRIANA TRIGIANI, New York Times bestselling author of The Good Left Undone

What is particularly striking about "Walk, Ride, Paddle" is its apolitical stance, focusing more on the personal benefits of outdoor activities. Yet, subtly threaded through its pages is a deep-seated commitment to environmental stewardship and service. This underlying message speaks to a broader desire to contribute positively to one's state and community, highlighting how individual actions in nature can lead to collective benefits.
The book's strength lies in its ability to reconnect us with our "next best steps" through the simple act of being outdoors. Whether you are a seasoned adventurer or a casual weekend hiker, it offers valuable insights into how nature can serve as a catalyst for new ideas and connections. "Walk, Ride, Paddle" is not just a call to explore the physical landscape but also an invitation to journey through one's internal landscape, making it a meaningful read for anyone looking to enrich their life through the power of nature.
This book part nature guide, part Virginia history, and part biography. And it seamlessly weaves those parts into a fascinating whole.
This book will inspire you to get outside. And by so, you will learn about the place you live, meet people with a passion for nature, and challenge yourself physically.
Fantastic read!
I selected Walk Ride Paddle, A Life Outside, by Tim Kaine
What’s it about?
It’s a travel memoir.
Why did I select this?
I was intrigued by the title’s premise; the photo of the author, attired casually, seated on a boat, with a summer background of water and trees; and curious why former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton suggested this story offered hope for our future. So, I thought it might focus on the beauty of nature and the need to care for our environment.
Did I realize who Tim Kaine, the author was?
Not at the time of selection, it just did not click who he was. After receiving the book and recognizing him, was I more or less impressed. Less, because the first thought that next entered my mind was another career politician writing about their storied, privileged life and the dreams they have how their world should be. Yes, yes, yes, I must assume a smart college student who graduated summa cum laude and then went on to graduate from Harvard’s law school. However, he is also a person who arguably married well, a fellow Harvard Law student, the daughter of a former governor of Virginia and Assistant Secretary of State for the Nixon administration. I comment privileged life because this story takes place over a couple of years, which include the pandemic years. Here is a United States Senator, former Vice-Presidential candidate, of Hilary Clinton’s – now I realize the connection, and former DNC head, having the opportunity to Walk Ride Paddle over 1,200 miles, while the rest of the country was mostly working, trying to earn their daily bread, or having the specters of COVID hanging over their head. Me? If I were a United States Senator, I’d be tirelessly working on how to solve the country’s ills, rather than trying to reward myself about a birthday or an anniversary for being a politician.
Do I have to comment about politics?
No, but neither did the author. I thought this book was about those memoirs collected while traveling, not memoirs on political commentary, which are throughout. I did “not” want to read about political comment, I wanted the nitty gritty on the travel experience, so, fooled me.
How was this received
Not independently packaged nor shrink-wrapped, rather, as is, loose.
Describe the book
This hardcover, jacketed, travel story book, borders on biography, for the locations within Virginia, travelled, by the author, through walking, riding, and paddling, and borders on autobiography, where we learn about what is important to the author, a standing United States Senator, for the Commonwealth [State] of Virginal. Be prepared to read about politics and the underbelly of the country. This has an above average number of pages, which includes some photos, at about (384) pages. The book physically measures “about” 6¼” wide, 9¼” tall, and just “over” 1¼” thick. It’s a simple book, with pages that are thinner, rather than thicker, a thick cardboard type of hard cover, and a non-descript non-cloth spine. The wording is clear and more a dark gray than black on the creamy pages. The size of the type and look of the fonts are perfect, but on the small side. It’s a high in quality, sturdy, durable book.
Why was this published?
I thought this was going to be travel stories for the above 1,200+ mile journey, but it’s more. It about the author, and stories of others, such as George Floyd. It’s about activists, and others, and commentary about immigration, social justice, change, diversity, advancing others who are overlooked or picked-on, and such.
Who is this for?
I think this is more for adults, rather than young readers. It’s for seasoned readers, especially those interested about this author. It’s also interesting to learn about the areas travelled through. Virginia is a beautiful state that can be enjoyed, while walking, riding, and paddling.
Hindsight
In hindsight I am just okay that I selected this. Reason just okay, I was fooled, I did not know it was going to have so much political commentary and/or observations within it, including celebrating political moments.
