Suffocate
Suffocate Lyrics
Suffocate
[Verse 1: Bryan Garris & Nickolas Calderon]
Eclipsing weight
Strangled by every mistake
The wind will hush your cries
In the storm of your restless fate
Haunting pride
Morals defied
Are you conscious behind the knife
Or is it just another disguise?
Drink from me
[Bridge: Bryan Garris]
Take it now, take it now
Everything that I have
Leaving nothing left
[Verse 2: Poppy, Bryan Garris & Poppy]
Eclipsing weight
Strangled by every mistake
Branded by all of your failures
A feeling that you can't shake
Eclipsing weight
Shut your lying mouth
Are you conscious behind the knife?
It all comes crashing down
Burdеned by our connection
I long for separation
In thе waning glow
Every breath tries hard to escape
Your reign is over now
Have you found your grave?
Suffocate
Ah
[Outro: Bryan Garris, Bryan Garris & Poppy]
I will dig until I find the fucking root
I suffered because of you
I will dig until I find the fucking root
I suffered because of you
About
‘Suffocate’ is the 3rd song from the album You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To. Bryan bluntly describes this song as being about someone, “stabbing you in the back.” It features Poppy and she was the one who hit up the band with the desire to work with them.
This collaboration “allowed us to expand the palette and do some weird, off-the-wall things that we can’t do in other songs. Because Poppy’s voice was involved, it allowed us to push the boundaries of what we thought was feasible.”

To be honest, it was [Poppy’s] idea. We were immediately down because I’m a big fan of her music, and the art that she puts out in general, and I know Isaac is a fan of hers as well, and Niko, our other guitar player. She messaged me like “Yo, we should do a song together.” and our album was done, that song wasn’t on it, and when she reached out, me and Isaac were like “Yo, we gotta write another song, we gotta make this work” so we got together the next day, and we wrote it at his computer, which we don’t normally do, but studio time was booked, so we gotta squeeze one more in. I was like “If we’re gonna have her on the song, it has to be one of the heaviest songs on the record”.
