Sara Cox leaves Radio 1: This station has been special

Sara Cox has said "this station has been so special to me" during her final show on BBC Radio 1.

"It's just been amazing to be at [Radio] one. We've had so many messages. It means so much," she added.

Sara first appeared on the station in 1999 and went on to present the Radio 1 Breakfast show between 2000 and 2003.

The DJ, 39, said: "I feel like a different person to the girl who started here."

Past and current presenters paid tribute to Sara during the show between 10am and 1pm.

Chris Moyles, who took over the breakfast show slot after Sara in 2003 text in and said: "You've joined the ex's club now then?"

He joked that he has a monthly meeting with former DJs Tony Blackburn and Vernon Kay that Sara is now invited to.

Scott Mills said: "This is the end of an era for Radio 1. No-one in broadcasting can tell a story like Sara Cox."

Current breakfast show host Nick Grimshaw also said: "Good luck at Radio 2. Hopefully I'll join you there in a couple of years."

Annie Mac, Fearne Cotton and Greg James were also involved in the programme.

Huw Stephens, Trevor Nelson, Dev and Charlie Sloth were among the people to say goodbye during the show between 10am and 1pm.

She was described as "inspirational", "funny" and "a brilliant friend" in the personalised messages.

There were also messages from Sara's friends and family throughout the show.

Before the show, Sara tweeted that her time at Radio 1 had been "14 glorious, mad, wonderful years."

Sara's first show on the station saw her co-presenting a lunchtime show with Emma B.

She went on to launch the Sunday Surgery, where she and the team won a Sony Gold award.

After her three year stint on the breakfast show, Sara went on to present in the afternoons.

More recently, she filled in for late morning show host Fearne Cotton during a period of maternity leave.

Before joining Radio 1, Sara was a model and appeared on Channel 4 and MTV and has since appeared on various TV panel shows.

Sara has fronted a number of Radio 1 live events all over the country, as well as taking her show to Ibiza, Glastonbury and the Radio 1 Love Parade.

The presenter has three children and married her husband Ben Cyzer in the summer of 2013.

Sara Cox now presents Sounds of the 80s on Saturday nights between 10pm and midnight on BBC Radio 2.
