Born in 1632 into a Jewish family, his parents were Spanish Jews who fled Portugal to the Netherlands in the late 16th century due to religious persecutions by Christians. In Amsterdam Spinoza received a rich and varied education in his younger years, ranging from Jewish and Christian studies to Latin, natural sciences, mathematics. As time progressed and his own thoughts developed, he found himself increasingly at odds with the Jewish Orthodoxy. When he was 23 years old, he was excluded from the Jewish community and synagogue. From there on Spinoza lived a quiet life in the countryside for a couple years until his friends convinced him to move to The Hague in 1670. In the city he supported himself as a lens grinder, a profession which probably contributed to his early death in a lung disease.

Spinoza was a rationalist philosopher and thinker. Fascinated by mathematics and the apparent verity that seems to characterize mathematical knowledge, his philosophy of ethics was thus modeled on the Euclid’s Elements. In other words through a given set of axioms and definitions, Spinoza would derive a number of theorems through simple logical steps, and by organizing knowledge in this way, the truth would be guaranteed and shown to be the result of a small number of evident principles.
