Tim Lea grew up in Australia and graduated from high school in Stamford, Connecticut. He attended Bates College 1979-1983 and graduated with an acting major in Theater and Rhetoric. He was the frequent star of stage productions. He frequently played guitar and sang at many small concerts on campus. He had a radio show as a DJ on WRBC. He was also a classmate of newspaperman Brian McGrory and Boston news anchor Jonathan Hall. He also served on the board of the Robinson Players, the student drama company.
His credits include work on CSI: NY, The Riches, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Flash Forward, Threat Matrix, John Doe, Transporter: The Series, Past Life, Lie To Me, and Helix. He resides in Los Angeles.
