You will find the WWF Centre at the historic Island House along the shores of the Tolo Harbour near Tai Po. Here visitors can sign up for environment protection and conservation themed programmes led by WWF volunteers that include visits of the Island House and garden grounds.

Presently, tours are held on Thursdays through Sunday each week and are mostly in Cantonese. However, they do offer English language programmes at times, often on the first Saturday of each month. Visit the WWF website for details and to make reservations. Note: If you are an English speaker, you can still pay the programme booking fee (think of it as a WWF donation) and just visit the Island House and gardens on your own instead of participating in the Cantonese language group activity.

As for the Island House, this was originally built in 1906 on a small islet that was connected by causeway. Reclamation endeavours as part of the development of Tai Po have now linked the island to the mainland. The house became a Declared Monument in Hong Kong in 1983, it is a two-storey, colonial style house with wooden staircases, wide-arch windows and verandahs. Within you can see a few rooms, some old pictures of the property and botanical flower artworks by Hong Kong based conservationist Sally Grace Bunker.

In addition to walking through and around the Island House, you can visit a small but neatly managed garden, there and some nice landscapes and a few places to grab a seat and enjoy the setting before departing. Note that you can also walk along the shoreline just below the Island House as well.

Island House is a magical place far away from the bustle of City Life. The house was declared a Heritage Monument of HK in 1983 and has been lovingly restored as a classic example of Colonial architecture with long verandahs and high ceilings. The House is now used by the World Wide Life Fund for nature HK as a Conservation Studies Centre promoting sustainable living.

Visiting the House makes a lovely event for the whole family, the grounds host a butterfly garden, beautiful mature trees plus a Pond and Herb garden.

The staff are on hand to share their knowledge and if you are lucky enough to meet the Centre's Manager for a private tour he will be happy to share his passion and enthusiasm for Island House, and various on-going projects to educate the young and old.

We went there on a family outing with office colleagues. The gardens are beautiful with some rare plants. The staff presented the history of the place and gave us a tour of the gardens.

Thanks for spreading the word about Island House, which is WWF-Hong Kong's sustainability centre . Built at the beginning of the 20th century and declared a heritage monument in 1983, Island House is home to 140 plant species, comprising a mixture of local and introduced species ranging from ferns to mature trees. Island House IS open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday except on public holidays. And yes, you can sign up for one of our guided eco visits, or attend one of our public events. In fact we have a Marine Appreciation Day coming up this weekend. Free admission!

A real gem next to the waterfront park and cycle track in tai po. During the recent heritage fiesta WWF staff and guides welcomed our families with a visit to discover more the about the house, old Tai Po and its connection to other colonial buildings in Tai Po, the district offices and old police station now turned into green hub. The plants and biodiversity in the gardens were the highlight for me and I’ll be back to see the change in colours and seasons and see what’s growing in the eco garden in the autumn and next spring. I’ll be checking out the next community festival.

Island house built in 1904 is a historic gem with its colonial house , light tower and surrounded by its own gardens and shoreline areas. A protected monument looking out over tolo harbour , the building is maintained and managed by WWF Hong Kong. Open weds through sunday to the public island house also runs a biodiversity school , is looking for volunteers with their eco garden and hosts regular school and community and other WWF conservation volunteering programmes.

Tai po already has green hub at the old tai po police station with vegetarian food run by kadoorie farm and now Island house - easy to get up from Tai Po market MTR station and with booking online. Thankyou to our guide !
