What travellers are saying
- 123pixFalmouth, UK535 contributionsWe were looking forward to visiting these gardens and they exceeded our expectations. It was 15 euros per adult and you could easily spend half a day here. The gardens have fabulous viewing points, sunken areas, water features, wildlife, Oriental themes, cafes and the most amazing plants. Lots of different routes and little paths to explore. We would definitely visit the Monte gardens again, so much to see and every season would bring its own delights.Written 30 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Richard HMatabeleland North Province, Zimbabwe340 contributionsThis is a very accessible peak because there is a road to the top. As you would expect from Madeira, it affords exceptional views. Well, it did the two times I was there because we had beautiful sun. It would seem that some low cloud can actually add to the experience. Expect it to be busy because of the ease of access and it is a starting point for walks.
Other people have talked about the walks that can be done from here and I also managed to hike to Pico Ruivo but don't really have anything to add except that it is well worth doing if you would like a very scenic and quite challenging walk.
Other people have also mentioned the toilets. It seems that many public toilets in Madeira do make a charge for using them. It is the case here. Brits and any others who are used to free ones, please take note!
There is a cafe and souvenir shop. I didn't think either were the best but they seemed fine enough. It is also the site of a radar station for the Portuguese air force so there is a big golf ball which rather dominates the summit and can be seen for miles around.
For reasons that I didn't ascertain, it is sometimes spelt Areeiro.Written 4 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. At the cable car departure point in the Old Town there was quite a queue, but it moved quickly and we were soon on our way up the mountain. Each cable car will take six people and the return fare is 18 euros per person.Written 30 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - marymary27Scarborough, UK872 contributionsThe garden is easy to reach by bus from the road that runs along by the sea. Like other reviewers, we would have liked a leaflet with a map on for easy reference. There is plenty to see, but not really suitable for people with poorer mobility as paths are steep in places and distances to walk between areas. The cafe was nice to sit in. The only toilets are near the cafe, quite a way from the entrance, perhaps space could be made for more in the museum building. Before we ended our visit we made our way to the toilets, it was almost an hour before the gardens were going to close. However the toilets were being cleaned and we had to wait at least ten minutes for access. It would be better if the cleaning took place after closing time.Written 1 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - cvk751Intervale, NH60 contributionsHighly recommended. We stopped in for a quick sampling and ended pairing some delicious aged blends with a cheese platter. The staff was knowledgeable and helped to pick a variety for us to try.
