Themes/imagery from Disney’s *Tangled* Rapunzel series?
We know that Taylor has drawn from some Disney movies and characters for inspiration of themes and imagery in her music. I hadn’t seen the Tangled series discussed much here so I thought I’d share my thoughts. u/No-Question5220 did an excellent post here a year ago about a similar idea so it seems good to visit in light of TTPD and the Eras tour updates.
I had some realization that the original Disney Tangled movie but particularly the Tangled after series (produced in 2015-2017) share some imagery and themes seen in Taylor’s discography. Some themes in the Tangled series:
-
of a yin/yang struggle of sorts between the moonstone opal versus sundrop as they try to be reunited, as metaphorically represented by Rapunzel and Cassandra
-
being “trapped” in a tower (episode “Fresh out the Tower”)
-
a princess (Rapunzel) trying to find her lost identity/destiny (as portrayed by a “twin” alter ego of sorts)
-
a fortune-teller and a [maze/labyrinth] (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QEpIrCpho2g) with clues to decipher
-
an alchemist
-
an eclipse
-
a levitating Rapunzel
-
a contraption that looks like vertical table she’s strapped to in the Fortnight video
-
“Who’s Afraid of the Big, Bad Wolf” episodes
One particular theme of intrigue that emerged for me was the character of Cassandra. While I think that the primarily underpinnings to the TTPD song “Cassandra" still refer to the Greek figure with the powers of prophecy (and Taylor’s recent voice memo for the song reinforces this), has anyone considered another possible additional layer of interpretation of Cassandra as the friend-turned-villain (then friend again) in Disney’s Tangled follow up stories of Rapunzel?
The Cassandra character in Tangled doesn’t really display a role of prophecy, but she does represent a story arc of betraying her close friend, and Taylor’s discography references a betrayal and mistrust. I apologize that this theory isn’t as well hashed out as many I see posted on here but I saw some common themes and imagery, outlined below.
Cassandra’s character described [here](https://disney.fandom.com/wiki/Cassandra_(Tangled)
Also, an article in which a writer on the series claims that Cassandra’s character is gay-coded: “In May 2020, Amber Vucinich, a story revisionist for Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, revealed that Cassandra "Cass" was gay coded, with "sapphic looks" toward the story's protagonist, Rapunzel.[18] She also said that there were many "queer women who boarded scenes [of] Cassandra," and that women-love-women vibes were ingrained in every drawing she did of the character.”
Taylor did a photoshoot in 2013 portrayed by Annie Leibovitz as Rapunzel.
Some other relevant Tangled scenes:
-
Rapunzel’s “twin” alter ego talking to herself here and here and here
-
Rapunzel singing about “finding” her true self/destiny, here, and here
-
A barren, scorched landscape reminiscent of the Eras tour TTPD imagery
-
Rapunzel lamenting the loss of her relationship with Cassandra
I apologize that this theory isn't as well hashed out as many I see posted on here, so it's more of some basic observations of shared imagery and themes I see with Taylor's work. Again, I'm not sure if this is a source of inspiration or if it's just coincidental and I'm reaching here. We know she draws inspiration from many places.
Thanks for reading, and this is my first post here so l appreciate the opportunity to share!
I’m surprised by how many thematic connections there are! I like the idea of Taylor watching this show for funsies, and then some of the images, themes and such coming through in her work, either consciously or subconsciously.
