Summary

  • Marvel Studios has introduced a new banner for the MCU's upcoming TV shows, reviving Marvel Television.
  • Marvel Television's upcoming series include Agatha All Along, Daredevil: Born Again and Ironheart.
  • Marvel Television's revival proves Marvel Studios is actively trying to fix its recent mistakes with its TV production techniques.

Following recent criticisms and major creative overhauls, Marvel Studios has implemented new banners for its upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, proving the studio is learning from its recent Phase 4 and 5 mistakes. For over a decade between 2008's Iron Man and 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home, Marvel Studios' Infinity Saga comprised only feature films, but the MCU saw a huge expansion into the world of TV and animation in 2021. This came after the establishment of the Disney+ streaming service, marking the beginning of the MCU's Multiverse Saga, but this produced its own set of problems for Marvel Studios.

Since the release of 2021's WandaVision, the first project in both Phase 4 and the Multiverse Saga, the MCU has delivered many vibrant, complex, entertaining, and dramatic TV shows. Loki, What If...?, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and Echo have become some of the most popular MCU projects in recent years, but other installments have faltered, garnering criticism from critics and audiences alike. Recent problems with Marvel Studios' TV production have spurred monumental changes at the studio, which could raise hopes that upcoming MCU shows, including Agatha All Along, Daredevil: Born Again, and Ironheart, will be strong additions to the franchise.

EXCLUSIVE: Following Bob Iger's new MCU release mandates, a Marvel Studios executive follows up on how it will affect X-Men '97 season 2 and beyond.

MCU TV Shows Will Be Released Under Marvel Television Banner, Not Marvel Studios

Initially, Marvel Studios' feature films and TV shows were all released under the Marvel Studios banner, separating the recent TV series from the previous Marvel Television studio, which produced projects including Agents of SHIELD, Runaways, Cloak & Dagger, and Netflix's Defenders Saga. However, recent problems behind the scenes at Marvel Studios have prompted huge changes, and these have now culminated in the revival of the Marvel Television banner. The new Marvel Television has no relation to the previous Marvel Studios-adjacent production company, but will give Marvel Studios the opportunity to better differentiate their feature films from their upcoming TV shows.

The first MCU shows that will release under the Marvel Television banner will be Agatha All Along in 2024, and Daredevil: Born Again and Ironheart in 2025. These projects will still be set in the world of the MCU, despite not releasing under the Marvel Studios banner, which will now be reserved solely for feature films, while Marvel Animation and Marvel Spotlight will also continue to develop new projects. These changes arose during a major creative overhaul following 2023's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and prove that Marvel Studios is taking clear, progressive steps to improving the experience of the MCU.

Marvel Is Finally Taking Television Seriously After Phase 4 & 5 Problems

Nick Fury in front of a bright light in Secret Invasion's finale

The expansion of the MCU with TV shows produced for Disney+ in Phase 4 onwards was very exciting, particularly for die-hard MCU fans, but this caused major problems for the more casual MCU viewer. It became more difficult for audiences to keep up with the MCU, leading to criticisms aimed at the prospect of having to do "MCU homework," and contributing to a rise in "superhero fatigue," as the sheer volume of new Marvel content increased dramatically. This huge increase led to a noticeable drop in quality, but an MCU slowdown has recently been confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger.

The implementation of the new Marvel Television banner will continue to solve these criticisms, most notably because it suggests Marvel Studios will no longer be treating its TV shows as feature films. The likes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, and Secret Invasion were all treated as six-hour movies, instead of episodic series, but this caused major issues, as the two mediums are different. Separating Marvel Studios' feature films and Marvel Television's series proves these two categories will now be developed differently, hopefully leading to an increase in quality for every upcoming project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
