Azteca was a latin rock band from San Francisco, formed by Coke Escovedo (ex Santana). The sound is a bit funky/jazz/soul oriented. "Mamita Linda" is a very nice and catchy song.

Somewhere between Santana and early Chicago. I think that says more about Chicago than anything else. Very enjoyable.

Rock, soul, funk, jazz, a bit of fusion, horns, lots of Latin percussion, and some corny, early-70s "peace everybody" sentiment. Sometimes this makes me think of Santana married to Chicago. Lots of good musicianship and diversity though, and a Lenny White appearance.

Coke Escovedo left Santana after touring South America at the end of 1971 to start his own band. He formed a seventeen piece band with his brother Pete. Housed in a colourful ornamental inca sleeve the music on the album is percussive latin rock with brass in the tradition of Tito Puente with songs in english & spanish.

What a wonderful document.
Latin soul.
Latin funk.
Latin rock.
An array of diversified musicians from drummer Lenny White, to conguero Victor Pantoja, to bass player Paul Jackson, to guitar virtuoso Jim Vincent, to 4 singers, 4 horn players (which included Tom Harrell), and a partridge in a pear tree.
When the Santana group broke up circa '72, timbale player ventured off to form Azteca, a band that attempted to do it all…and not too bad of a job of it either.
This could easily be Santana IV, or the sound that band wanted to get to…yet Azteca had a sound all its own.
Carlos Santana and Michael Shrieve would be in on a few rehearsals, however Columbia Records would but a stop to that right quick.
You will get to hear Neal Schon tear it up on guitar on a few tracks though.
An underrated gem in the history of music as a whole.
