I have seen many Irish, British, and Scottish films. This film is, to me, one of the great ones. It tells a story of real people who helped a wounded and despondent King to recover his life and most importantly his spirit. I was not looking for another "Braveheart" with all its action (and superfluidity of historical inaccuracies). This is not an "action" film , although there is appropriate violence in major parts. If you are looking for an epic adventure film with great battle scenes look elsewhere. If you are looking for flesh and blood people with strong values and heroic virtues than I believe this will touch your heart.
In this day and age of morally objectionable rampant materialistic cultural values so reflected in the mass of modern films/television this film is the proverbial "breath of the freshest (Scottish) air'. I enjoyed every minute of it. Although born in Montreal , Canada I really felt that this film is truly about universal human themes that cross all differences. It is well written with good music and finely acted. As a Catholic I appreciated the Christian values so strongly emphasized. However , you don't need to be a Christian to enjoy a cinematic celebration of the human spirit of simple people whose lives are dramatically changed when a major moral dilemma comes their way. I will watch it again with my wife.
I also recommend other Scottish based films like "Whiskey Galore" ," I Know Where I'm Going", and Walt Disney's films 'Kidnapped" and "Rob Roy, The Highland Rogue" (Ignore the historical inaccuracies of Rob Roy and just enjoy it for fun! After all ,very few historical films really do justice to history or the classic novels from which they are derived.)
P.S. I have family in Northern Ireland and someday hope to return for another visit and this time to see Scotland for the first time.
Cheers everybody1

movie starts off slow but it does deliver somewhat in the second part

Following in the footsteps of a Best Picture, big-everything film like Braveheart had to be daunting. What this film does, with a tiny percentage of the resources, is truly impressive. The nods to the cinemaphotography, pacing, and music to it's predecessor were noticed and appreciated. And in its own quiet way, this film establishes itself as a worthy complement to that celebrated film of 25 years ago.
While Wallace was a loud, precocious individual who abstained from leadership until it was thrust upon him, young Robert was nearly his opposite in every way. The true miracle of the story was that Robert finally found the strength in himself that Wallace called upon all those years before. Both men knew there was advantage in the unexpected, but Wallace had experienced more loss than young Bruce. He knew why Robert could not believe as he did... not yet. This film follows the journey of the younger man as he learns that lesson of hope in his own way.
Over the years, I've read the histories and the legends, from Jane Porter's The Scottish Chiefs to Sir Walter Scott's Tales of a Grandfather and many others. Among those recountings of Robert's stories included in the movie, the Red Comyn, the Three Men and the Farmhouse, and especially that of The Cave and the Spider, I enjoyed greatly. I missed the lack of dear friend Randolph and would have liked more of Douglas, but that would have made it much longer. There were several wanderings or departures from the stories, but the essence of Bruce came alive: he became a true leader over the course of many small, intimate, simple decisions that shaped him as a man. Where Wallace incited, Bruce inspired.
This film is true to his legacy, his eloquence, and his devotion to the people of Scotland. Wallace knew: only a man such as this could lead them to victory.

I realize that Brave Heart is a hard act to follow, but I was hoping for a better written script than what was presented in Robert The Bruce. I’ve set it aside for a while and will view it again at a later date to see if I get more out of it. Too bad, I thought that Angus MacFadyen had given an outstanding performance as Robert The Bruce in Brave Heart.

Wants for historical accuracy concerning Robert the Bruce, but a decent watch. Hits on two of my requirements: Medieval setting and Scots. Arrived on time and exactly as described. Thanks!

It’s easy to focus on historical triumphs and forget that they are often accompanied by real struggles. Director Richard Gray and an incredible cast and crew offer an insightful portrayal of Robert the Bruce (Angus Macfadyen), beaten down by numerous defeats, betrayed by allies, and injured by friends. He sends his followers home and questions his higher dream of freedom.
On the brink of death, his spirit and his health are nurtured by Morag (Anna Hutchison), a war widow, who carries the dream despite her own great loss. Encouraged the persistence of a spider, by Morag’s vision, and interaction with children and nature, Robert’s passion is rekindled and he ultimately leads Scotland to freedom.
Those who are struggling to keep a business afloat during COVID restrictions or who have lost too many friends who shared their dreams may find restoration for their own weary soul in this story of hope and in the incredibly beautiful cinematography (filmed in Montana and Scotland).
Watch it again, celebrate freedom and rekindle your own higher dreams.

BORING and no CC
Reviewed in Canada on February 2, 2024
Okay, so have you ever tried to watch the soap opera Coronation Street, but the accents were to difficult to understand? Same with this movie. The Scottish accents were really thick and with no CC I couldn't really figure out what was going on.
Plus it was boring. Just plain boring.
If I was Scottish I think I would be really annoyed. They made picture of about a hero only to show the most BORING part of his life!
