Wakefern COO Joe Sheridan Honored by Susan G. Komen

Thirteen years ago, Wakefern COO Joe Sheridan and his wife Joan were confronted with the kind of diagnosis every family dreads. Joan was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Thirteen years later, the news is much brighter. Joan’s cancer is in remission and Joe is being honored by Susan G. Komen – the organization that helped them navigate through those difficult times.

Joe will be part of Susan G. Komen North Jersey’s inaugural class of Pink Tie Guys. He will be honored at the 2016 Pink Tie Affair, scheduled for March 4 at the Pleasantdale Chateau in West Orange.

“This means a lot because it’s a cause that touches both of our hearts,” Joe said. “Hearing stories of how other families dealt with cancer helped inspire our own personal fight.”

According to Susan G. Komen’s official website, the honor is bestowed upon “partners in the Komen promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever.”

“They are advocates for breast health education and breast cancer awareness,” the website says. “Pink Tie Guys are leaders who can help mobilize, energize and engage people in Komen’s mission and events in their communities, companies and organizations.”

Wakefern has been a longtime partner with Komen, supporting everything from Race for the Cure events to fundraising dinners. Joe’s wife Joan was awarded the “Journey of Courage” honor at the organization’s Pink Tie Party in 2014.

“Joe and I shared our stories and our journey with hopes that others might gain strength and hope from our experiences,” Joan said at the event. “It is important not to let fear overtake you and to make the decisions that are right for you. And when the darkest part of the journey is upon you, it’s important to remember – to know – that there is life after breast cancer.”
