The Weld Critical Incident Response Team on Friday identified the man who died earlier this week while in custody of the Weld County Jail.

Keith Schmedtje, 50, died at the hospital while in the custody of the Weld County Jail on Tuesday, according to a CIRT news release. An earlier release indicated he experienced a medical event, and medical personnel at the jail tried to treat him before he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:44 p.m.

Police do not intend to release further information until the conclusion of the investigation. Greeley Police Detective Jon Bohl is the lead investigator and can be reached at (970) 350-9572.

Schmedtje was booked into the jail the morning of May 5 after an arrest by Erie police on suspicion of second-degree burglary and criminal mischief, according to online arrest records. His bond was set at $10,000, and he had an advisement hearing Monday, court records show.
