NBC's TODAY Show to Spotlight West Virginia and its Successful Ascend WV Remote Worker Program | WV News | wvnews.comSkip to main content
West Virginia's Governor, Jim Justice, recently announced that NBC's morning news show, TODAY, will feature a segment about West Virginia. This feature is set to air on Wednesday, May 15, during the 8:00 a.m. hour. The Governor encouraged all residents of West Virginia to tune in and see their state highlighted on a national platform.
Morgan Radford, a regular reporter for NBC News, spent a few days in West Virginia to cover the story. Radford has family ties to the state. During her visit, she took the opportunity to learn more about Ascend WV, a project for remote workers. She also enjoyed some of the outdoor activities that the state offers.
Governor Justice warmly welcomed the TODAY Show team to West Virginia. He's excited about the chance for people across the country to learn about the state's achievements. He hopes this will be a cause for celebration for all West Virginians.
The filming for this segment occurred in Greenbrier Valley. This area is one of five communities that are part of Ascend WV. This program is known for attracting talent and has seen a lot of success in its three years of operation.
Brad D. Smith, President of Marshall University and Co-Founder of the Wing 2 Wing Foundation, spoke about West Virginia. He recognized the state for its natural beauty and hardworking people. He also noted that it's a place full of opportunities, with more students deciding to stay after graduation.
After the segment airs on TODAY, a longer version is planned to be shown on NBC News NOW.
Ascend WV, which is the focus of the segment, was established with a $25 million donation. The funds were given to the Brad and Alys Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative at West Virginia University. The donors were Brad D. Smith, former executive chairman of Intuit and current President of Marshall University, and his wife, Alys. Governor Justice and his Tourism and Economic Development departments also contributed to the program. The program emphasizes outdoor recreation opportunities.
Since it began last year, Ascend WV has received nearly 50,000 applications. So far, the program has helped around 600 people, called Ascenders, and their families move to West Virginia. These new residents have come from 38 states and nine countries. The program has a 96% retention rate. For more information about Ascend WV, visit AscendWV.com.
Additional details and behind-the-scenes photos from the filming can also be found on Ascend WV's website.
